I found a 91 model 1.6 motor for my cousins 87 Samurai, he is wanting to go with a larger motor (his is dead) I found one at a place near where I live that has only 31 (yes 31) original miles on it. The salvage place bought the motor out of a new Geo Tracker that was used at Disney Land as a battery powered prop vehicle, the motor is basically new...BUT it has been setting since 1992. Do you think I would have problems with it? What precautions should I take or are there any easy tests I could do to cover myself. I am getting the motor at a good price and actually its a new motor. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT. These is kinda wierd to find a motor like this, just making sure my cousin will be happy with it.

Thanks

Mark

Well i'm by far no expert on motors but I do know that lett'n them sit ain't healthy on em. Seals don't like it when they don't some oil on them every once and a while and can dry rot. Reckon the time'n belt should be replaced as well as take'n a good hard look at all seals to see if they need to be replaced.....doubt with that low of milage any water got into the oil but if it did there could be troubles.

thats about all I've thought up so far
good luck

You will at least have to do the following:
Change every single seal in it
Timing belt
Water pump
Oil pump should be inspected
Remove head, inspect valves and rings/cylinders
12 yrs is too long to sit , I'd bet money the cylinders are rusted pretty good and it will either have to be bored or need at least new rings . You'd be pretty luck if the pistons aren't rusted right to the walls via the rings and rod pins . Check the crank as well , if it's been dry in one bearing , it's toast . Sorry for the bad report....

I would pass on it. There will be problems with valves, cylinder walls and piston rings. Keep looking, BTY, Did you get my P/M?

Disney Land, No humidity, no really extreem temps.

chances are Disney had some kind of service check list where they had to start the engine to keep it good.

you could email someone at Disney and ask them what they do to take care of engines in battery powered vehicles?

also was this vehicle in an accident? or did they pull the motor and let it sit in their storage all that time?

Yup, its gonna probably need seals all around. It might need to be checked for rusted up cylinders depending on its storage conditions. I'd take a chance with it myself (and will if you don't want it) but I would pull the pan and the bearing caps for a lookie-see before trying to use it.

UPDATE, I talked to the salvage place that has this motor and they say they will guarantee it for 30 days, no smoke, no leaks ect. they said they run every motor they get and it was only pulled a year ago, so the motor has run in the last year. I thought it had been sitting since 91 but this doesnt seem to be the case, it was driven very little (at a Resturant in Disney) then bought and parted out. They also will give me a 30 guarantee on it. Thought I might hook it up to a trans I have and crank it out of the car and see how it runs, I can also check the compression at that time.

what do you think, I can get it for $750

That's a tad high for a weak series 1.6 . Those rods and the crank are not the strongest , the 30 day warranty doesn't make up for that part . You could just about rebuild a 1.6 for that , and use a newer and better crank/block...
