I really have the itch guys. I want a Jeep just for wheelin, tell me what you think I should do :D

Are you sure that it is a 4.0L and not the 4.2L? Did someone do an engine swap?

I'm not very knowledgeable on YJs, but what I do know that 87 was the first year of the YJ. I think that it corresponds with Chrysler buying AMC.

Although, $800 is pretty good especially if the frame and body are in good shape. You'll end up replacing everything else eventually...

I'll help out a little... the YJ was designed and built entirely by AMC. Chrysler didn't buy them till after the YJ was in production for over a year.

That $800 jeep looks like a good deal to me too. That is the same drivetrain I have in my YJ that I had at the bash this year.

my bad, it might be a 4.2, I do know for sure that it is an inline 6 with a carb. I was told the carb was having problems... to tell the truth I'm really not crazy about this Jeep. I am in no hurry to buy because sure as I do a better and cheaper Jeep will run into me. You guys are just gonna have to remind me now and then to be patient... ;)

I was told the carb was having problems...
Also, I'm trying to hold out for a YJ that is fuel injected.
this 87 YJ that I looked at has the bed liner stuff on the outside. ... The plans I have for my next project don't really include bedliner on the whole jeep.
Seems like it's not the jeep for you. It's not injected, has carb problems, has liner all over it which doesn't fit your plans. Soft top is torn, and the 5 speed will be crappy given it's an 87.

It's your money, but personally I'd hold out for a 91-95 that's closer to your vision. Good luck.

Why don't you try to make a deal with saharah88, see if he can swing a deal with the insurance company on keeping the jeep and you can buy it from him putting some more money in his pocket that they are trying to shaft him on. Then you would have a true beater that you could thrash on and build a crawler out of...... Just a thought....

My bad Jim, I just saw your post on saharah88's post! That's the way I would go......

2 things... he has only showed pics of his totaled jeep from one side. I wonder how much damage was actually done to it. seems like if it was fixable he would fix it himself. Also, I'm trying to hold out for a YJ that is fuel injected.

Rio, speak your mind, I do, the actual blue book on an 87 YJ is 2250.00, Trina, that bedliner you speak of if its Rhino liner and it was prepped and sprayed right it makes alot of difference, noise, insulation, if there are no drain holes plugged you can just hose it out, easy to maintain, I had my CJ7 done over 10 years ago and the sides and floor pans are like new when you look underneath. I did have it put in my 1990 w/the 5.0 when I did a 90 day frame up restore last year and love it, my 800.00 1995, and 1988 are both going to get it here soon when it gets warmer. Sooooo you don't know until you've tried it. Get them pictures posted I'd like to see em. The pawn shop here had a really clean 1992 YJ with the Sahara package, no dents, rust, 4.0 litre, 5 speed, hardtop, and whatever else comes with that for 4500.00. I almost bought it but I think 4 jeeps at one time is enough for one person. I don't know if the pawn shop still has it or not they keep it under lock and key round back behind the store in a fenced in area and I only looked at it briefly one time, one of the owners henchmen took me back there to check it out before he talked to his boss, mumbled something about a dog, but I ain't scared of no dogs, use'ta run a paper route so I learned alot about dogs and their fear of humans, that's why I don't own one, anyway post up some pictures, of the jeep, there is a red YJ down the street from me for sale also, don't know how much, but if you're interested I'll check it out for you.

I will post the pics when I get home later today. FYI... this 87 YJ that I looked at has the bed liner stuff on the outside. I couldn't tell much about the inside because it's plum full of boxes and junk. My idiot cousin is using it as a storage building

My CJ5 has herculiner on the inside of the tub and I do love that. The plans I have for my next project don't really include bedliner on the whole jeep.

If you are wanting to build a crawler, it realy doesn't matter. The frame might be tweaked a bit but to actually fix it from an insurrance point of view, you would have to replace the tub and the hard top making the repairs more than the value of the vehicle. Insurrance companies don't care about sentimental value.... Straighten the frame, pound out the rear put some tube fenders on the front with some full width axles and then your ready. Minus the fuel injection of course but not a bad way to go.

Most of the time you can buy the vehicle back from the insurance companies or make a deal to keep it. They would rather give you the vehicle back instead of arguing for more money... We usually get them back for about $300..

Thanks Will. That explains some of the differences between the 87 and latter years.

If your plans are to keep most of the parts on the Jeep, then I would hold out for a later YJ or even TJ. I've seen TJs going for $5000 lately. Almost makes me want to buy one.

If your plans are a motor swap, transmission swap, 4 link, etc, etc, etc, then I would only be concerned about the quality of the frame and the body.

While I agree with Larry on ost things and in other models I agree with this, but the drivetrain never changed in the 97 just the body and frame. There was one major problem with the TJ that will probably stop you from buying this........

In 97 and 98 the one way seal on the fresh air vent into the ac box on the TJ is made in such a way SOMETIMES in a downpour you will get a little leakage into the floorboard on the passanger side. I know I just ruined your want for this jeep,,, But it is for the best....

Nothing worth getting upset about a 97 tj. Mine is fine and has been except yes it leaks a bit of water into the passanger side floor when it is raining hard, but you can barely tell due to the permanate 1 inch of mud in the floorboard.
