i broke my damn wrist and my birthday is the 23 so im wondering what i should get. boots ignition cover or a steering stabilizer. by bike is notorious for headshake and i would know. my dealer had the same bike and loved it but said it their nature to have headshake. he had a stabilizer and it was a works preformence and he said it works great. what should i get? r their any stabilizers out their that dont cost like 500$ and work? which is the best? also i have boots but could use some new ones and i typed all of this w/ one finger.

Not bad for chicken pecking ;)

I've heard that stabilizers will help with head shake. As far as cost.....I'll have to do some shopping after lunch. I'll post later.

Sorry xr, but you gotta pay!! They are all pretty pricey little bugggers. Head shake is an annoying problem. What bike is this happening on? Could be minor adjustments causing excessive headshake.

I think you mean Works Enduro Rider (W.E.R.) instead of works performance. There are basically 3 dampers on the market: Scotts, W.E.R., and GPR. Scotts and GPR mount on your handlebar, W.E.R. mounts on the front fender. Scotts offers more adjustability than the other two, but I've never been in a situation where I needed to adjust on the fly. My dad and I both use W.E.R. dampers and they're well worth the money. Once you get it set right, you won't notice the damper going slow, but once your on a straight-away, or really get going, you'll notice an immediate difference. I've heard people say a damper is one of the greatest mods you can do to a bike, and I'm inclined to believe it. I wouldn't say they're essential, but they definately help. If nothing else, the damper will make you much more confident. Scotts is the most expensive of the three. W.E.R. and GPR are close on price, but I've heard GPR offers free rebuilds. The company sites can give you much more info than I can list here.
GPR http://www.gprstabilizers.com/
Scotts http://www.scottsperformance.com/
W.E.R. (U.S. site has moved, can't find new one) http://wereurope.com/ or just call Drew (owner) at (908)637-6385

Can this mod recdue arm pump? Hand fatigue? I can ride my 99YZ250 for about 5-10 min before i have to stop, due to my fingers and hands being numb!

Thanks for the answers.

I had the same problem, but a stabilizer is not the answer. It sounds like you may be crushing the grips a little too hard! I have a '00YZ250, so there isn't much difference in the two machines. You are most likely suffering from CTS, or you simply need to strengthen your hands and wrists.

I would recommend doing some strength training on the hands and wrists, but more importantly, concentrate on not holding on to the bars too tight. I'm guilty of that for about the first ten minutes of the day, then once I relax and get in the zone, I tend to relax my grip and everything is alright.

I tend to think I held on so tight because I scare myself half to death, seeings how I'm such a bad rider!!!

Change your GRIPS...... try thick ones? You'll be suprised at how much that alone will affect arm pump.

I'll say get better gear before getting the stabilizer, Gear is more important than a "bolt on" product.

Heh heh.

You could do like my brain dead buddy did, and tighten up the head nut enough to make it stiff to turn.....he broke both legs when he couldn't turn and shot off a cliff. No head shake though.

DO NOT DO THAT!!! IT WILL GET YOU MANGLED!!!

I'm afraid if you want to reduce this trouble, you will have to cough up the cash.

They aren't hard to install, unless you buy the weld on unit, and don't have a welder /wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif

how long have you been riding?
Id also get some gear then bolt stuff on the bike, nothing can stop head shake completly. you may want to check and see that the steering nut hasnt back off and is bounceing against the handlebar inbetween the clamps, I coulnt tell you how many times ive seen that.
hows your susp feel, is it stiff, or soft or set up for you or the guy who had it before you?

theres alot of things you can due to reduce head shake, haveing the susp set for your weight and riding style should be one of the first things you try. riding style can also have alot to do with it.

I hear ya rooster. Ive only had this bike since Dec. SO really i have like 5-6 trips on it. As soon as i took delivery of it, i installed new foam grips, as i do on all my bikes quads....

I noticed my gloves suck, so maybe get some new ones.

Regardless, i ride one weekend a month, so i must be out of shape.

Yeah i notice after I have a few beers, i can chill out more, and not grab the bars so hard like i normally do. With the brand new paddle, it wants to lift the front end constantly, for that, so im always trying to compensate for it by a death grip and leaning forward.

If i dont figure it out soon, i may sell the bike, cuz i could ride my Banshee for 20-30 min and i was fine.

The W.E.R. definately works, they all do. As far as price, just do a search for companies selling them. I just happened to have a Rocky Mountain catalog laying here, and the W.E.R. is $320 (you can probably find better). You can sometimes find them used for a good price, but most people tend to hang on to them. I transfered mine when I switched bikes. I think I posted this before, but Scotts is going to be the most expensive due to more adjustment, but W.E.R. and GPR get the job done just fine. Personally I just see the extra adjustments on Scotts as unneeded bells and whistles. Installation is simple. As somebody else said, the weld on towers (Scotts, maybe GPR) are obviously just a little more complicated, but there is a bolt on tower option available too.

tell me how long youve been riding, or just how long youve had the cr, I havent been around all that often but I get the feeling you havent ridin long or you havent had the bik very long. either way I say put good year on it and have susp set up to your weight and see what happens, Id hate to see you spend that much when you first starting out.

just so you know 6gear tapped through little stumb brush and my bike will sake some, but my ass is over the rear fender and the front floats a hole hell of alot, I do the same in sand, never had headshake on motocross track, and if i did it was as over heels, and it was my fault not the bikes.

I have considerd a dampner but have ridden a few bikes with them and dont see the need, maybe mines just set up better than the rest

I dotn know, find someone thats got one on theres and take it for spin around the track or out in the desert, whereever you ride

I dont know if ive missed the boat on this topic or not. MY YZ does not head shake at all (although i had a CR that did in the past) i just want to reduce arm pump, and hand cramping\numbing.

What is the answer, oh wise one? I would love to know! Let me ride the road to freedom.

However, i will admit my bike was set up for a 220#rider, wheras im a 194#rider. Ive played with comression, rebound and preload, and it is far better than as delivered.

Tighten up the head nut! /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gifThats a good one! How about a couple of bungee cords stretched out to the forks??!!/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

A buddy of mine has the Scotts on his GSXR750. I'd ridden the bike before and after it's installation. No more high speed wobble, thats a good thing.
