Steering Shaft after 1\" Body

My steering shaft needs to be a little longer after doing a Daystar 1" body lift on my 83 CJ7. What is the secret to getting a little more length from it? Thanks for any help.

Re: Steering Shaft after 1\" Body

I did a 1 inch body lift on my 85 CJ7 using Daystar and I didn't have to increase the steering shaft. Why do you? Just curious.

At the end of the shaft, where it attaches to the power steering box and where the little rubber boot is, it slips a little. Its sort of like it's stripping it. I don't know? I took it apart and put it back together trying to get it a little longer on the threads but had no luck.

Well then I better check mine.

Good luck.

That is truly strange. There is absolutely no reason you should need to extend your steering shaft with a 1", or even a 2" body lift.

Yes, extending it would be a good idea, and yes, it can be done. It's made to extend - heat up the shaft and melt the plastic keeper in the middle - some
guys try to beat it longer (breaking the plastic piece), but heating it is better. I don't have specifics on how this is done, maybe some has more info...

This question/problem cropped up many times over the last few year on "another" forum.

Yes, Brad. Longer shafts are often needed when you raise your tub away from your gear box.

PM's proven suggestion has always been to drill out the plastic pins, extend the shaft, drill through the existing outer holes to make new inner shaft holes, then instert a new suitable piece of plastic.
