i have a 83 cj7 w/power steering. the old steering gear is leaking and the adjuster looks to be almost all the way down. my question is what kind of steering gear will bolt right up. will a chevy or a full size jeeps work? or can my gear box be rebuilt. a new gear box from agr is $250! i would like to do it for a little cheaper than that:)

I think the saginaw box that Chevy used forever on their cars will work. I would look for an old Caprice or something like that. The used box should be pretty cheap, but make sure it is in better shape that what you have./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

You can buy a rebuilt CJ gearbox for around $180.00. The AGR is a damn good box though.....You may want to think about how long you plan to own your Jeep, and what type of terrain/roads you intend on driving....Jeepfiend is right,,,,if you do get a used one..make sure its in good shape..AND,,,thats its newer than the one you have now, Its a pain in the butt having to "replace your new "Used" replacement"....(speaking as one who has been there)

Same problem here, stock power gear box is shot. I picked up one for a '87 Camaro (std. not variable) but it only has 3 mounting holes, and a 30 spline input shaft. Any other thoughts ?

Thanks

Rebuild the little bugger. A complete rebuild kit from NAPA is less than $35. It's not rocket science, just some time and a little energy and patience. I'm dumber than a rock and if I can do it you can! Stop by thier local store or click on the logo below and go to the Seal Kits.

I'd take the replacement gm fullsize box and strg. shaft off at the firewall and adapt it to the jeep (gm) column, then it will match the fullsize gm boxes which are $25 or so at the boneyard.

RWD car not trucks... olds 88/98, cutlass... buick 225 or la saber... chevy malibu, camero, caprice... pontiac catilina bonneville tempest ...look for 4 bolt holes or drill and tap the 4th hole in a 3 hole box.

I picked up a 3 holer (87 camaro) from Autozone this evening. There isn't any material there to drill. Unfortunatley with them it's going to be hard to "request" a 4 holer.

The steering shaft isn't a major deal, I'm thinking about a Borgeson shaft anyways since mine is a bit loose.

I'd rebuild the CJ box but I'd rather get a "better" box , but don't want to shell out the $$ for an AGR. Just looking for something in between.

Thanks

Hey Tyler, I kicked the AGR idea around and decided it was just to much $$ also. I ended up getting a '74 camaro box at NAPA for 130 smackers. I'm not sure but I think CJ's after '79 have the fittings that aren't flared (what ever you call those) but I think 4WD Hardware can fix you up with some conversion parts. The box I got is a variable ratio and they had two different ratios, a quicker one for the Z28. I went with the slower one. If I had the thing on the road and trail I'd tell you how it works but so far It's held up great in the garage./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif HTH

I got a 4 hole one off an old ford car, 80's LTD or something. The fittings were different but the big thing is to check if your pittman arm will go on the shaft as some are different. Only after I had it all installed I find that i get one full turn less out of my steering wheel so my turning radius is larger now. Something to watch out for if you go the junkyard route.

81 CJ7 304/904/D300 scout 44's locked, full cage, 33"wildcats, warn HS9500i, bush bar from hell and diamondplate sides to cover gaping rust holes!! Coming soon OBA!!
