The other day I jumped into my truck and went to turn the key but it wouldn't move, the steering wheel was locked up tight, and the trnsmission wouldn't shift out of park. After tinkering and fumbling around in the dark for a good 20 minutes I jacked up the front axle and was then able to turn the key, move the steering wheel, and shift the tranny. The last thing I did with my truck before the incident, was turn the wheel all the way to the left to demonstrate to a buddy how much turning radious I had, but the wheels were straightened out before I shut off the truck. Does anyone know what caused this lockup, and could it happen while I'm driving?

Sometimes In my 73 I have to move the wheel back and forth to get the key to turn.
Once the key is turned The lock pin is pulled out of the lock plate and unless ya turn the key to the off position while you are driving it will not lock up the steering wheel.
What year is your rig?

yea, if you turn your wheel even a couple of degrees with the ignition off, the wheel locks up. just try turning it a little while trying to turn the key and it will unlock itself

It's an 85 Suburban.
The process you guys describe is the first thing I thought of, (moving the steering wheel while turning the key).
Usually you can move the wheel a few degrees with the key in the lock postition, but this thing was tight, I mean zero movement. Any way it hasn't happened since, and I've been careful to not force the wheel all the way over, which I believe caused the problem in the first place.
