My son's 79CJ5 speedometer cable has oil coming out of it where it is attached to the speedometer. Could this be coming from the transmission? BTW thank you for all the help I have received from this board! I have been lurking here for the better part of the last year while doing the frame up on my son's Jeep. Have not needed to ask any questions because I have usually been able to find them in the help section. The Jeep is has been running since Oct. but this one has me stumped. Thanks

?? Disconnect the cable, spray the fittinf on the trans with contact cleaner to remove all oil, leave cable disconnected and drive to see if oil reappears. There's gotta be some kind of seal or maybe sealing the cable's nut with pipe dope or teflon tape to keep oil in cable?? Good Luck.

Make sure your transfer case is vented and the vent isn't plugged.

That would do it huh. Great answer!

And then there is the bright side to the whole problem... bet the speedo is nice and smooth... no jerky (wonder what the average reading is) how do you know what it says? Sure glad the radar detector is still working.

BTW: If it's GL5 the smell is a dead giveaway, rotten eggs anyone. Who farted?

Good Luck
