\"Special order 86 CJ-7\" ???

I've got a guy telling me he has a 86 CJ-7 that has a factory V-8 and it was a "special order". Anyone got any clues on this.

Check the VIN #'s engine designation, even a "special order" would have to carry the correct engine code, if it indicates a six he's either " fibbin' " or someone lied to him and he believed it. Haven't heard of any COPO(Customer Ordered Production Option- special options available only when specifically ordered by the buyer, big thing in the sixties with muscle cars) vehicles being produced by Jeep.

Re: \"Special order 86 CJ-7\" ???

there are a few reasons this is unlikely
1 the 304 didn't exist then and they never put a 360 in a CJ
2 the 304 died fron early 80's gas crunch and emissions.. i think it would have been illegal for AMC to have put a V-8 into a CJ at that time
3 no one hear has ever heard of this..one of us would have!

he might be telling the truth, I saw a TJ wrangler that had a dodge 360 in it, it wasn't a special order, more of a dealer showoff thing, but they did sell it with the 360 from the factory and a d44 rear and probably a 1/2 ton dodge 5 speed as opposed the the stock TJ tranny

MarkyMark I can't believe that Jeep can sell something like that??? There are too many rules and regs on new cars today.....I wonder if that is really "legally" possible, I have never heard of anything like that but if you say so WHY DIDN'T U BUY IT!!!!

That would be great but I doubt it as well. If it did exist it would probably have about as much power as you adverage Briggs and Straton with all the smog equiptment. It would be amazing if Jeep would sell something like that 360 powered TJ but I doubt it the liability would just be too much. You should see all nice vehichles GM cuts up from their proving grounds, they won't even talk to you about buying the parts off them. Nothing like seeing an LT1 with a few 1000 miles on it get crushed to bring a tear to your eye. I won't even go into all the MUTTS and HUMVEES that have been needlessly cut in half. But I met a guy who claimed to be building a show TJ with a 318 out of a Dakota in it, he told me the swap was pretty straight forward as the bellhousing patterns are identical. The scary part was he had the 35c rear end, Beware of flying parts. Any way he may have been full of dookie but it's something to think about. Well I think I had a point but it's gone now. /wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Travis is right. The smog thing alone would preclude the factory doing that. About the only way it could be done is to use a "skunk works" which would then get the smog work done "Sans-Factory", but that would be a long shot. The problem is that the vehicle as manufactured must be smog legal, AND be smoggable later on, which means specs and manuals to dealers. In the early sixties when the muscle cars were often very limited factory production, you did not have a smog requirement, and you didn't have greedy lawyers ready to sue everybody if something went wrong./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

The only way this could have happened was for the vehicle to have been farmed out AFTER production to get around the factory rules. Kind of like what Olds did a long time ago with the early versions of the Hurst Olds when GM had a 400 ci limit on those particular vehicles, sent it to Hurst for a 455 install.

I have seen some "special" Jeeps around here. There are two TJ's here that have factory V10 viper engines in them. Not to long ago
I saw one on the net that detailed the swap. The two here where both done by the Jeep dealer as well as the crate V10's being ordered
from them also. I have yet to see either of Jeeps go off road unless the beach counts here in Daytona Beach!

I have a last run 86 w/ dana 44 from the factory. I have spent alot of time looking a factory specs for the last of the CJ's and there was no V8 option for the 86 year model, no way no how.

Re: \"Special order 86 CJ-7\" ???

An officer (CEO) in the corporation I work for claims he has a YJ with a V-8 from the factory. I have discussed this with a President of one of our subsidiaries who is into jeeps, and said this was impossible. Due to the status of the owner, I am unwilling to approach him on the subject. I believe he may have purchased it new with a V-8, but it was a conversion or aftermarket item. The YJ is a pre 90 model, I am not sure of the exact year.

It was great however, when I finnished my jeep rebuild (engine/tranny, the jeep will never be done.), I drove it to work. The next day, the CEO drove his YJ and the President drove his YJ, (hadn't bought his TJ yet) and parked on either side of me. The CEO has never driven his again to work. Kind of like saying "I got one too".
