Has any one ever tried mounting their spare on the rear drivers side fender"Willy's style" maybe using the stock bracket? My 32" mud-terrain is too heavy for the tailgate and is currently mounted on in the bed and I would like to get the space back. I am too cheap to buy a new bumper with a swing away tire carrier, etc.

You've got a grs11,warn winch and an arb bumper..........And you're too cheap to buy a rear bumper with a swing-out tire carrier?????????? If you look in the tech section on this board there's an article on how to build one fairly cheap. Besides, the sheetmetal on the side of the body is probably weaker than the tailgate.

I considered doing that too. But flagged it for the reasons stated.
I run 31 x 10.5's so I got an old 4.5" x 16" rim and mounted a 700 x 16 tyre on it and it stands upright inside the rear and is secured with ratchet straps.
It's skinny, lighter, and is roughly the same O.D. as my 31's.

In the case of 32's you have the option of an old 7.50 x 16", or a newer 235 x 85 x 16 radial. Same benefits as above.

Thanks for the suggestions. After the GRS II and ARB,etc I was just trying to stop the hemmoraging. I was thinking about mounting it on the hood "Land Rover style" but it burns far too much oil to reduce access to the motor.

Thanks for the link to Glenn's article. It looks like Glenn Wakefield and the kid down at the Oriely Auto Parts store may be the only ones left running Thornbirds.

Oddly enough, I was bootin' down the freeway today, and noticed how the Kia Sportage's have a steel swing-away carrier for their spares. I wonder if you found one in a junkyard, could they be easily adaped to a Zuk?

Now, of course, i'm thinking Kick/Track, as I can't fit a spare any larger than a 235 without a body lift... not good when I plan on 31's in the new year. A Sammy shouldn't be any more difficult.

I have been throwing ideas around in my head for awhile now. I came up with an idea to do a fold down rear tire carrier and have it to where it would serve as a work table while folded out. However there is one more idea that I have come up with that will take the weight of the hefty tire and transfer it kinda over the rear cargo area of the zuk.

Here's my first idea:

But after reading some posts about the weight of the tire just hanging off the rear. I thought about building the rack system in kind-of like a pre-runner style to where it stil has the fold down function, but folds toward the front of the rig and centers the rear cargo area [flat] <---- as in the tire will lay flat. I haven't come up with any drawings, but it's all in my head for now. Just some ideas I wanted to toss in for you guys.

Wow Art !!!

I now remember seeing this on Scotts web site, but plum forgot about it. THat is a veryu nice set-up he has, but take the one in the left pic and incoperate some arms on it to attach to the rear bumper and that is the idea I got in this noggin of mine. I see poly bushing's on one end. Does it set on top of the rear corners or something and fold out to the rear?

Went out and used my new Christmas present and took a picture of my set up. I have a Grocery store display rack on top of my floor mounted spare tire and all tied down to a couple of tie downs bolted where my seat belts used to be.
Got plenty of storage and can easily tie down things!!!

I hope all that stuff is fastened down REALLY well. All that stuff can do real damage in an accident.

I used to carry all kinds of stuff behind my back seat. I figured there was now way it could get out from behind there. ....two sideways rolls and then 2 end to end flips and I had all kinds of SH*T flying around the inside of my samuari. I got the ever-lovin' crap beat out of me by stuff that I thought was well packed.

Yep the rack is well tied down with 4 nylon cinch straps on the 4 corners. I also use the nylon rope you see in the left corner to Tie things down in the rack when going off road. I do just us bungee cords for every day driving though. (for things ON the rack)
