SOA rear and SUA 4 inch springs front, which springs to use for rear??

I currently have a 4 inch lift that is a bit too harsh for a daily driver, so I was thinking about SOA rear and SUA front. I don't
want to go SOA in the front because it is too big of a project for me to tackle on my own (right now). The rear seems pretty easy
though.

My question is will my Jeep be level if I use stock CJ (or YJ?) springs in the back and keep the 4 inch springs up front?
I have heard that SOA nets about 5 inches of lift. So if you have any suggestions on how to keep her level, let me know!

Just so you know: I have 35's, a 304, and a 3-speed. I will also be adding a spare tire/bumper/rack combo soon which I
was thinking might weigh the back down some enough to level it out.

TIA,
Fred

Re: SOA and SUA (again)??

I know of a few people that run this way, the first one that comes to mind the the president of our jeep club. He runs stock axles with Lockrights, SOA rear, SUA front, and Q78 Swampers. With the sag of the rear springs, kids, and junk, it does level out. He still has awesome articulation and no problems.

Do you know if he runs 4 inch springs up front and stock springs out back?
Thanks
Re: SOA and SUA (again)??

I don't think so. Actually I think he runs 2.5" springs in front, but it doesn't make sense. Maybe he does run 4". Before the swap he had 2.5" springs with 2" body lift. I'll have to check on that for you.

His jeep can be found at http://www.midcoast.com/~jeeps/club/johnk/johnkimball.html, but most of it was before the YJ tub swap, full cage, and spring move. Still, an impressive jeep nonetheless.

i just finished a SOA on my 81 cj-7. i didnt think i could do it, but the rear is real easy, only took 3hrs. the front was a bit harder, but everything seemend to work for me. my stock driveshafts fit front and rear, the only problem i ran into was steering. i moved my pitman arm to steering knuckle link under the leaf springs and it hit the leaf springs under articulation. i put a slight bend in order to fix that problem (but that didnt last to long with my 35's)anyways, i had a 4' lift with 33's, when i was done with the spring over using stock heavy duty cj springs i had a little over 6 inches of lift, so i question how level your jeep would be with a 4inch kit in the front, but springs to tend to sag and after several months my springs are sagging and are probably an inch lower.

That's the kind of info I'm looking for. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to level it out? Would longer shackles up
front do anything good for me?
Thanks

G
longer shackles up front may help out in leveling your jeep, but i have heard bad things about running longer shackles, like they put added stress on your frame, and are supposed to affect the driving and steering ability of your jeep. i have had inch longer shackles on my jeep for a year now, and i havent had much of a problem wiht them

Actually I would think the best way to do it would be SOA in front and SUA in the rear, SOA in the rear will cause spring wrap so it's not as simple as it sounds. I just finished SOA on my rig and it's really not as hard as you would think. Just takes time, patience, and some common sense.

I've heard spring wrap is really only a problem with high horse power rigs under hard acceleration. Maybe someone could
inform me about this as well. Most of what I know I've read on this board and in 4x4 mags.
Thanks

G
spring wrap on the rear axle isnt that bad as long as you keep the right foot under control. i had no problems with axle wrap when i had my i6, but 3 trail runs after i put in a 360, i spit out my driveshaft...althought that may have been because of different reasons. i have found that the SOA in the rear does have some axle wrap but it doesnt seem to effect the wheelin too much, except for ledges...i have noticed that i get a lot of axle hop/wrap when i am attempting to get over ledges. if i were you, i would research and find some write ups on doing a spring over and just do it front and rear...
