I'm considering doing a SOA with stock axles. Will the stock driveshafts work or will I need to get longer ones? Will I also need to change any steering parts? I'm trying to do this without buying any parts that I will not need in the future-such as if I put bigger axles under it I don't want to replace driveshafts for a second time. Same with steering-I don't want to replace it now just to replace it again later. If that's the case I'd wait and do it all at once.

Is a SOA really expensive? All the guys I know did it for almost nothing excluding new tires. Most of them had the longer driveshaft from previous 4"-6" SUA lifts. None of them even have tracktion bars since axle wrap isn't a probablem for them (even with a TBI 350). If you pay somebody to do it then it might cost you a lot, but if you do it yourself it doesn't seem too expensive. What do other people think about the cost of SOA.

Just what ever you do, don't imitate the idiots in my town. They just moved the axles under the leaf packs and tightened the u-bolts down REAL tight. I actually saw guy do this in his back yard in about 2 hrs.... of course, later that week his rear axle 'fell' off while taking a corner down from my house. Fortunatly no one was hurt, but geeeeez....

You've gotta compare apples to apples here. We're talking about doing this from ground zero, not after you've already done a 4" lift and have half of the parts already. Also, a YJ requires a bit more than a CJ. Those guys will be sagging and negative arching stock springs within a year without some sort of anti-wrap device...get on a nasty obstacle and it could cost them some broken parts as well. I haven't had mine on the road yet, but I've watched a couple of my buddies go through the trials & tribulations of spring wrap & wheel hop and learned. One was running a stock 4.0 (he's completeing a Magnum 5.9 swap right now) and the other is running a stock 302 from a truck (he's broken the most stuff and he's not heavy-footed).

I'm just trying to get a cost referance of what "expensive" and "cheap" is. As for those guys with the SOA they have been running them for a 2-3 years with some serrious wheeling without problems. I don't know why but they haven't had any probablems...yet.
