Just how much smaller is the Delco than the Fram? My Cherokee's Chevy 2.8L has a small 1/2 quart filter (PF 47 in AC Delco). Never had a problem changing the oil every 3 months/ 3k miles. Every brand of filter I buy for it is the same size, though. In my case a larger filter won't fit in the space.
A larger size filter has more overall particule capturing and holding capacity and will last longer than a small one. Both the small and large will capture the same size particules. When a filter becomes overloaded, like when it is left in the system too long, it "unloads" itself by letting the captured particules migrate off the filter media and back into the stream, thus eliminating the filter's usefulness.
