i bet you could do it, im using 4 inch pvc pipe and i cut a 4 1/2 inch hole in my fender cause the pvc 90 degree bends were so big . if you were to use 3 inch pipe you could bring the hole up more towars the back more. ill show you a couple better pics

inside again

you could bring it up more and move it a lil back with 3 inch pipe, and you could even find 3 inch thick flexing rubber hoseing . its very very very easy, only hard part is cutting the hole and keeping it lined up cause theres three different things in there you gotta go through. just get a long skinny drill and make a pilot hole and that will make it extremely easy. after that all ya gotta do is mount it with varied hose clamps

well you are helping me get motivated!!! I think you are rite as well and 3" would work! I need to take some time and figure out how I am going to do it now I guess. I think I will be a copycat though cause that looks slick.ANybody else know anything here? Ty SCRAm

id be honered if you were to copy me lol, let me know if you want any more pics at different angles or anything

ill prolly have to move down to 3 inch tubing when i get tj flares , i hope i didnt screw myself lol

but remember if you use on of the real snorkel ends you have to make a water tight box for your air filter inseide the engine compartment and thats a big hastle imo lol

man i cant wait to get my jeep like yers

As soon as I get my hands on a set of hole saws I will be making a snorkel and some coil spacers, I too was woundering what to do with the washer bottle but I will prolly just move it to the pass side where the od coolent bottle was and use an aftermarket washer bottle if I cant figure out how to mount the old one. I was also thinking of making a wayer tight box inside motor bay to keep the profile of the snorkle low...I may just wait till I get my cage built and see how much room I have left after that. One other idea is to run the air tube inside the pass compartment(did this on my old VW GTI rallycar, had no problems with fumes or anything, ran it all the way back to the hatch back area along with the batt and a few other things to lighten up the front and weigh down the back)...I have way too many ideas in my head right now and no time to do them all, I think I should open up a shop or something to do all this stuff on other ppls rigs...What you all think?...andy

andy

hey andy i just got a VW GTI rally car, you think in the future you could give me some pointers on things to do to it. i already have a complete roll cage in it and a HP cam

i also debated putting the snorkel on the passneger side but it turned out to be more of a hastle

Re: andy

Well I am getting ready to head into town and C about getting some parts for the install. I tlked with my new Jeep friend last night and (He needs to register so I can give him a name LOL) He was thinking of useing 3" stainless exaust for the part that runs up the windshield. I thought that was a great idea. We would like to have the safari snorkel top on them for the look. That leaves us with where do we put the air filter? How? So any ideas would be great. I am going to pick up the pvc today and then try and figure something out. Ty guys SCRAm

Re: andy

For the air filter you could look in the salvage yard for the right size air cannister that you would want. I've seen a couple guys who have used Ford ones that came out of the late model Escorts, they are more of a cylinder shaped. A better one I think is the Suzuki Samurai air boxes. OR you could buy something like an air cannister from Intense Performance. For the top piece you can buy just the snorkel head from any ARB dealer but the dam thing is $70!!! To me that's just rape. You could easily get something like this one though

Which costs about half of that and is more like what the Hummers use. You could also build this pretty easily yourself for around $10 or less.

Another idea just to throw at you is something like this. Everything including the snorkel cover are made from parts at a local HomeDepot and best of all it was cheap! The airbox is from a Samurai.

One thing nice about this setup is that you don't have to worry about cracking that outside pipe from trail damage. Plus most water crossings won't come up much over your hood anyways, if they get deeper than that you're floating like a turd. Not sure which route I'm going yet though, make sure you post pics of whatever you end up doing!

Re: andy

I like that alot! Easy too. I was at home depot getting supplys and sold a 3" Rubicon express lift for his ZJ. THe guy was like looking at me odd and then asked me what I was doing with all that odd stuff i told him a snorkel for my jeep then he went on and on lol. I gave him rubicon expres phone number I am 100% that he is on his way to order the lift lol. Well I am getting ready to get started take care! SCRAm
