Skyjacker or ProComp?

I need some help deciding on what brand of lift I should get for my '85 CJ7. I'm going with a 4" lift. I would like as smooth a ride as possible so I was thinking the Skyjacker Softride was the way to go. Then I hear that Skyjacker springs sag a lot over time. And I also see that Rosser has a 4" ProComp kit for $280, while the Skyjacker is $450 at 4wd Hardware. I don't know which to chose. Please give me some advice. I'd like to order the kit next week.

I used a 4" Pro comp lift on my YJ for about a year, it didnt sag much at all and with the spring clamps opened it was a better than average suspension, and worked well on even some of the most gruelling trails. I ran the hammer trails with it a couple of times. Im kind of spoiled now though with a spring over suspension and if I had to start over it would be the only suspension I would consider.

I recomend you go back several months and read the 'numerous' posts on that very subject...in a nut shell you are going to find that 'cheap' means CHEAP. If you want a soft ride then spend the bucks. I have the Dick Cepek springs that are made by Tough Country...Stiff ride. To get a soft ride without loosing your lift, it takes a lot of leafs in the spring paks...that means more money. Check out National Springs....I have rode on a couple of jeeps with those springs...nice ride.

Springs are one of those things that you can't upgrade....once you have em'...your stuck with em'.

I have the skyjacker, and while i can attest to the fact that it has sagged to 2.5" from 4", it is mostly because i run them without lowered bumpstops and flex them more than they should be... They have an EXCELLENT ride compared to the procomp and i got them with the hydro shocks because the nitro are pressurized and too stiff for my liking. Anyway, I spent the extra $$ for my skyjacker and now I am allowed to laugh whenever I see a Pro Comp jeep bouncing down the road. Not to say that they cant flex, because several swear by them, but it has been my experience that they do not flex as well nor are as soft riding as skyjacker... that and i hate four wheel parts.

I hope Jeepman95's right , I just ordered a skyjacker 4" for my 85.
Have you run the nitro's? That's what I ordered and now you made me paranoid.
I could change my order because they havn't shipped them yet...backorder.
BTW Quadratec had the best price I could find...Right around 500 w/shocks depending on which ones you wanted.

dont be paranoid, my friend in his yj runs them.. although i cant say it is as smooth as mine, it is far from the worst... i think of the nitro as being rancho shocks on a firm setting and the hydros a soft setting. the nitro take hits harder without compressing suspension.. good for speed and jumps(as much as they could be) however a bump on the highway would be too quick to compress these and you will get jounced a little. hydros i think work better for slow easygoing off roading because they compress real easy and a fast bump would definitely be felt by the bumpstops.. bottom line. highway and slow trail riding (extreme but slow that is) get hydros. fast baja like or like to gun it through ruts and such and you will like the nitros. just my opinion, would like to hear from others on this one though.

Looks like I need to call tomorrow and change my order. I drive mine daily and slow wheel no baja racing here. Thanx for the tip. Where the heck were you when I asked these question!/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif
If they already shipped my order I'm going to send you my mother-in-law for telling me to late./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

I have Nitros on my Stock CJ-7 springs and the ride isn't that bad, unless I am going over 45. Even small bumps feel huge at speed. I had a problem with one leaking, but they fixed it. The Nitros actually aren't that bad, but When I get my Lift I'm getting Hydros. I use it too much on the road.

Thats 2. I'm calling tomorrow. CHANGE THE ORDER! What the hey , and save some green in the process. If anyone else has hydros or nitros (and skyjacker 4' lifts)give an opinion on how you like or dislike them.

I'm gonna add to the questions here. I know it hasn't been too long since this stuff was first discussed, but I am pondering whether to go 2" or 4" lift. It's problably gonna be skyjacker, but Black Diamond makes a 3"

What all has to be done with a 3" lift. I know with a 4" you need drop pitman arm and drive angle adjuster things, but what else. How much more will it cost to go with 4" than just the cost of the lift? In other words, how much will all other mods cost?

Here is my view on this topic:

I have 4" ProComp's on my '86 CJ7.
It is on the stiff side, but i'm using the supplied shocks (es3000 ??).
I'm going to change these for a set of Rancho adjustable..
I have loosened the spring clamps and the shackle / frame spring eye bolts.
On the side, they have not sagged at all...
I'm thinking about removing one of the leafs in each spring...

To clear 33", here is what i think is a "killer" setup:

-OME 2.5" rear YJ springs, used front and rear (will need some mods on the front, becuase they are 2.5" wide, stock CJ is 2")
-1" body lift
-3/8" shackle lifts.

This should give you enough clearance, to run 33".

I have driven an YJ with the OME springs, and that was the best leaf sprung Jeep i have ever driven ....
A friend of mine is installing this very setup, it should be finished in a couple of weeks...

Ok, i admit that this setup isn't exactly cheap, but the handling is very, very good....

I've got the whole skyjacker deal on my '82 i installed probably 5 years ago through 4wd Hard. When first installed...it was awesome!!they may have sagged a little.1" body took care of that.Still a great ride.I mostly cruise pavement.I run 33's w/ 4:10 gears

What is the best price anyone has seen for OME. One of the catalogs I have is about $800 or $900 without shocks. That does come with the parts needed to convert to YJ springs though.

Reitman,
go with the 4" you will want the longer leaves for extra travel. get the extended brake lines (or I figured out my local parts store makes hydraulic lines custom and i think it is a common practice) and get a XJ pitman arm. It bolts right up and is something like 2" drop and will be cheap from a junkyard... Will help offset the cost of the springs.. BY THE WAY i didnt lower my steering or anything, but i did get extended brake lines for the 4" and i droop so much with extended shackles they get taut. YOU WILL NEED them for the 2.5" lift anyway I have seen.

I just read an article on the new Skyjacker Monolinear leaf spring kit for the YJ in JP mag (May 2000). Sounds like it might be a good kit and it includes evey thing to do a proper lift. I called Skyjacker and it will be out in about 3 weeks for the nominal price of $1300.00. Sounds bad but when you add the individual cost of all the parts together that comes out about $300.00 savings. This kit gives you about 6" lift.

Jeepman95 I called and checked to see if they shipped my order (been on backorder foralmost 2 weeks} and no they didn't but guess what.........the lift kit had been restocked yesterday.(for the nitro shock one) So I changed my order to a hydro one , no problem BUT it's on at least a 3/4 week backorder./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif Man I can't win. I would love to tear the jeep down and get started cleaning but I don't want it setting there for a month or more. I do drive it everyday.(got my silverado but the jeeps more fun)
I almost ordered the first kit but went for the hydros. I ordered a bunch of other things too , but most were for the lift like swaybar discos, bumpstops ,t-case drop , stainless brake hoses ,pitman arm ,new stabilizer kit ,and diamond plate cab corners.............THIS IS KILLING ME!
Now I remember being a kid sitting at the christmas tree waiting for mom & dad to get up./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Oh yea the mother-in-law is on standby defcon 2

haha, i know how that feels dirtdog, you will like the hydros... hey, if you are gonna trash your old shocks you could probably run them till the hydros arrive... they wont have much droop to them and it probably wont be good for them but it will get you down the street. I had the tranny drop kit on mine and ended up taking it out, for some reason the shims on the rear springs were all that i needed, but my friend with the 2.5" kit (with shims also) put the drop spacers on his and now his driveshaft vibrates less. go figure. I would install it after a test drive as you might not even need it. if you do it is a 5 min job to install, if not you saved yourself 1" of ground clearance. Swaybar discos are worth their weight in gold if you ask me, and i always bring a crowbar to wedge in between the frame and the swaybar to help ease them back together after a run. Good luck, hope everything goes as planned!

Thanks Jeepman. I know what you mean about the t-case drop , one guy needs it the next doesn't. Go figure.$30 is a bunch for washers though./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif I just wanted to have it in case my fillings fell out in my first trip around the block./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif A smooth as possible ride w/ flex was what I was after and the way you described each shock you nailed mine down to a T. Street/driver and low speed mud/rocks. Ive got to get mine on a ramp before I spring it. I know it takes breakin time but I would like to see some #'s in a month or two. I'll be sure let let EVERYBODY know if I ever get the stuff and on.......Hell you'll probally hear me yelling./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif
