Shock Inversion

I am looking to put some new shocks on my CJ; What benefit, if any, is there to mounting shocks upside-down? Can you do this to Rancho 5000's?
Thanks for any help.

The only benefit is if you need to clear a suspension component.

Gas shocks don't care what position they are in: even horizontal, as in the steering stabilizor.

Most shocks can run inverted. Racers do this to decrease unsprung weight (every pound counts on a race vehicle). Others do it for clearance, some for looks. Do not invert a Black Diamond XT shock (trust me on this) they don't work.
