SFA vs TTB front suspension

Alright.. I have an 88' BII and I have been thinking about turning it into a trail rig. I live in Alabama and most everything down here is mud and not really a lot of rocks. I know it would be a lot of work to convert the stock suspension over to a SFA. I am currently toying with the idea of running 35-38' tires. Will the front end it has (a dana 35 I believe) hold up to this kind of abuse?

only if you like working on your truck

IMO, 33" is the largest you should run on a D35. The axles are tiny, and so are the drive shafts! If you want to do any serious wheeling with tires 35" or more, you will need some beefy axles. my suggestion would be to find an early model bronco, (with the D44/9" axles in it) and swap them over into your BII. Id also get different driveshafts, yours are like twigs

Look closely at that axle. There were NO true d35's in any production B2's. However, there are several hybrids floating around....Meaning, looks like a 35 from the outside, but has d28 R&P.

Even if you don't do rocks, I'd say SAS. Those TTB's plow through mud. A d44 will give you the strength to run bigger tires to get those axles out of the mud a little.

As for the d-shafts and axles in the 35 being weak, I'd have to disagree for mud. You should be able to run 35" max on a d35, 33" max on a d28...depending on how you drive it. I've seen d35's last a long time w/o breaking running 37-38's, but the guy knew when to use the go-pedal.

I've got a knee-high stack of broken d28 shafts from my 31's and Lockrite. Now those ARE twigs.

I think I am gonna postpone this project for a year and save some money.. and learn how to weld. Also take that time to do this all right the first time.. Now the research begins
