serial number (frame) location

I think there should be a place on the frame of the jeepster that has the serial number or VIN number for each vehicle. Could anyone tell me where it should be? I am using two jeepsters to make one good one and I'm trying to locate the serial number for the frame on one. The body is still there but it came with no identification plate on the fire wall. I supposedly have a title for this jeepster but I better make sure it matches before I start trying to get it titled in my name.

Thanks in Advance

Gavin

Hi,
Try looking at passenger side frame rail, It's stamped on the top of frame rail between the shock mount, and the firewall.

Just out of curiousity, I went and looked at mine. There is a number stamped there. It matches the last 5 digits of the vin, so I guess I have my original frame. If you build a vehicle using a different body or frame, I think the frame determines the vehicle identity.

Yes, you need to have the title for the frame. Since it is on the frame no one will really look at it as long as you have the vin tag on the firewall. But, if you have to get your rig inspected they might want to see that number, and if they dont match...... whoops! You did not do it! A bit of bending the law. If you have a bill of sale you can get a title after you go through this maze of red tape and a bonding process. (no, that does not mean making buddies with the friendly 8-5 M-F all pointless holidays off folks at the DMV) I would get it done right, that way you do not have to ever worry. It might cost a few bucks or be a pain, but hey, I would much rather be clean and clear if the issue ever came up. If you use the titled frame and the other body, I would just swap tags, no way they could ever tell.

He could always apply for a recunstructed title. But like you said, some "red tape".

Same deal, I call it a salvage title, there must be 100 different ones that you can apply for and the DMV makes it a pain because all the paper work has to be filled out, not one blank left blank, and the DMV guys cannot overlook or bend any rules because they are just thinking about when it will be 4:30 and they can shut the doors so they can leave at 5:00. A robot could do that job, unless they are worried about electrictiy use, the DMV robots could run the operation 24 hours a day 7 days a week, but that would not be proper form for a standard issue govt. robot. Robots would have to work 8-5 also./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I thought about working for the DMV, but I'm not a people person. Then again, neither are the people working there! ;o)

You could also fill in the number by welding, smooth it out, and get a number punch set and put a different number on. I know, it's probably illegal but if you're doing it in good faith, I don't see a problem with it. Beats the DMV hassle, might be cheaper too.
The frame number is not really a hidden vin. It's the serial number used by the factory to make sure the correct body and chassis were mated together.

Ummmm,,,,,, shure, yep that is a number alright officer! I will be, never seen that one before, you think it is the code to the stash of NOS Jeepster parts out in Rosewell, New Mexico? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Have fun, loop holes and legal stuff are always fun to deal with. Look for the government job wanted ads. Pretty funny, the post office here was offering $14.327/ hour one time, like how in the world do you collect 7/10 of a cent?
