Sending unit and fuel pump to fuel line?

How is the fuel line connected to the sending unit and fuel pump? I'm getting ready to bend my own fuel line and I was wandering how they connected on OE CJs. Mine right now uses rubber tubing to connect the unit to the line. Is this how they are done from the factor? Mine doesn't have the OE engine or fuel line (I think). Is there suppose to be a bulge in the fuel line where the it goes into the rubber tube? Any info would help. Thanks.

I'm not certain how it is on OE CJs...I have a length of rubber hose connecting the metal fuel lines to the sending unit/tank in the same fashion that you do. I'm pretty sure that there was some variation on this...my CJ mechanics books all discuss how to remove the fuel tank and they all talk about unhooking those hoses (as well as the vent and filler hoses...)

Measure once, cut twice...or is that the other way around?

Tim,
I just replaced my 85 CJ factory sending unit. It used rubber hose from the tank to the hard lines attached to the frame. They used compression rings to attach the rubber hose to both the sending unit and hard lines. I talked to my local mechanic and he recommended good quality hose clamps on the rubber hose since there is no pressure.

Good Luck.

Hey Tim, I just put a 22 gallon tank and lines on my 83. I bought the 1/2inch fuel line from summit and 10 rubber coated clamps from ace hardware to attach to the frame with self taping screws. I went with the 1/2inch line for a little more volume. The aluminum line bends very easy with your hands, just take your time. You can feel it when it want to kink. Also ace hardware hook me up with a compression fitting to a barbed end for the sending unit and fuel pump. Then I just bought a barbed end with a flare fitting to screw in and out of the fuel pump. Works great and no leaks. Good luck on your project! Just my $.02. C-ya TJ

Tim,
There is a short piece of rubber tubing connecting the fuel lines to the tank and the pump at the motor. The reason for the tank hose is so you will have a flexible connection so letting it down for service is simple. The pump I guess is so the line would not chafe, and or break from being too rigid. The motor and trans sit on rubber and move. I hope this might explain it, later.
