I'm looking for new headers for my Commando. I've got a 70' with the 225 in it. None of the parts places near here seem ot have any idea. I don't need to have anykind of high performance things, I just want ones that don't have rust holes.
Any ideas would be great,
Thanks-

Manifolds from early 231 will fit. Take an old one with you to the salvage yard or bring the gasket set to match up. Mine are both rear dumpm from an early 231.
J.C. Whitney headers will not fit due to front body mounts. Don't buy them.

I would suggest you contact Mark Vilbert for a used original set of exhaust manifolds. He can be contacted at jpstrparts@aol.com
Headers will do nothing for you below 3500 rpm which is where most people operate 98% of the time. They will increase under hood temp and noise. Stock manifolds can be sand blasted and painted with special exhaust paint to avoid rust.

John--Didn't know there was a body mount that would prevent the use of those headers--I stand corrected-- Thats what this is for--Thanks,we all learn something. I'm with everybody else I'd just use the cast iron originals--much easier and more durable.

I have headers on a 68 with a Caddy V6 engine. Other than the heat problem, they are OK. A little noisy but the sound with the correct mufflers is nice. I have stainless steel flexible collectors on each pipe to absorb the vibrations least the manifold bolts can break. I believe I bought mine from Advanced Adapters many years ago (1988?). If your interested the collectors came from Uni-Flex at 502-554-2626. My exhausts exit from the side of the Jeep (through the rocker panel) just in front of the rear tires.

No problem!
I had to find out the hard way. Bought a set, let them sit in box for six months and then found out they wouldn't clear the front body mounts. J.C. wouldn't take them back. Lucky for me I posted them for sale on the Jeep board and Dan bought them. He got a deal. I also had the front clip off (still do)and I doubt if they would have cleared the fenderwells without modification.
Junkyard 231's the best bet. Buick 225 needs backpressure for optimum performance.
I'm in Pensacola. I'll have my '72 on the road soon.Looks like you're not too far away. Send me your info. I'll get you listed for our East Coast Chapter. (look for post)

I'll take everyones advice and seek out new/used manifolds. My old one(original passenger side) has a seam right below where the three tubes come together. This has split apart and doesn't look as if it'll stand up to any welding. There is so little metal and so much rust. All of the salvage places around here have '80 and up cars-very few older things (I'm getting used to the chuckles when I tell them what I'm looking for). How new of a 231 can I pull off of and still make it fit?
Thanks
