I am going to change out the seats in my 72 Commando.Has anyone changed out their original seats to a different aftermarket seat, like the Bestop Trailmax seats or others? Were you able to use the original seat brackets/sliders? What modifications if any? Thanx!

I used Trailmax Super Seats. They fit the stock brackets and are great off road. The side supports really cradle you in the seat and give a much more confidant feel behind the wheel. The biggest drawback is the passenger side rear entry problem. I used a driver's side bracket for better stability so there is no "fold and tumble" feature and even if you did use the f&t bracket, the high back wouldn't allow the eat to tumble anyway.
I've been thinking of adding a second sliding mechanism at the floor so that the entire assembly will scoot forward for the rear entry.

The problem you'll have is that the "seat" area of the aftermarket seats is thicker then the stock seat. If you use the original brackets with aftermarket seats it will raise the seating height - perhaps too high depending on how tall you are.

I used steelhorse bucket seats, but had to use a seat bracket from a J-truck to get the height back where I wanted it. The J truck brackets are about ~4" high compared to the stock brackets which are ~6" high.

I used the orignal brackets on the passenger side and that seems to work fine.

I've got a set of Pontiac Fiero seats sitting ready to go in. Flat, thin bottom to keep the seating position low, lots of bolsters and padding to keep me in. My 72 came with a set of "tractor supply" seats that look a lot like TJ seats...but I can't get my thigh between the seat and the steering wheel. I've also seen Mitsubishi Eclipse seats used, again short bottom pad and lots of bolstering...Usually around $45-$75 from a junk yard and my Fiero seats should be around $150 to cover in leather or $100 in cloth...

Yep, Isuzu Trooper front seats. they have a vertical adjustment, slider and recline, all manusl adjustments. The backs fold far enough forward to allow access to halfcab behind the seat, not sure if it would be enough to allow rear seat access in a hardtop though.

WARNING: You cannot use the stock brackets, they would be way too high. I made some adaptors from 1/4" flat stock. Drill holes to match stock bolt locations and drill other holes to match seat slider holes. I countersunk the seat bolt holes on the bottom side, ground the bolt heads down and welded them in. So when I bolt in the adaptor, the bolts are sticking up, add nuts & washers and the seats are secure.

Andy....I ordered the Bestop Trailmax seats today.Pretty good prices.I got 2 front and a matching rear, non F&T.I need 5 seats. My plan is to see if I can mount the rear seat all the way to the rear, and add a lowback Trailmax seat in front of it.That would allow 5 people.I have my M416 trailer for camping supplies. My buddy added an extra rear seat to his Scrambler, but it is verticle in the rear like a CJ,where the Commando angles in.But in a Commando with the extra space,it may work.A Jeepster has a little less rear space. And since it is for kids, leg space is not as important.
