This started out as one for someone else but I kinda overbuilt it and estimated the weight all wrong, ended up too heavy for them. So I cut it up a little bit to try and reduce some of the weight and built it for mine instead. What made it so heavy is that the interior frame is made out of 1.5" square tubing with 1/8" wall and then 3/16" steel over top of that. I have it all painted now just need to get some time to bolt it up!

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

Scram thanks for reminding me!! A local hard had one but they told me to come back in a couple days cause they couldn't find it right away. That was probably 3-4 weeks ago, so I'll go check it out!

Here's a side view, it's sitting kinda crooked because it only was on with two bolts. That one bar is bent outward for mounting lights on in case you are wondering.I need to get some lights for those TJ flares yet...

No D-rings on this but there are mounts for tow hooks on the underside right by where the bumper bends back.

I wish I could strike a deal locally with someone that does spray in truck bedliners to coat this stuff with, any idea what these people charge?

Good lookin' screw-up AJ!
We all know that your bumpers are deer tested, but we don't have many deer here.
How will they work with moose or buffalo? We've got those all over the road up here?

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

Looks good...I was trying to work a deal with a local bed-liner to spay my truck as a demo truck and all that but they never got back to me and now I dont want my truck to look wet all the time with lil drops on it...We have a Line-X shop here in DSM but it would b a bit too much to hav all your stuff shiped and then spryed, plus think they are a bit pricy...andy...I ordered lights for my TJ flares today, $9/each, will get them ina few days...I thnk I'm going to go with one of Claytons mfg. hard-arm kits, run RE 6" ZJ coils up front and a combo of my Rusty's .75"shackles and RE 6" spring pack out back, going to try and get by for a few weeks with the stock drive shaft after I do the lift till I can get a SYE, thinking a Tom Woods setup for that...andy
oh and AJ we need to go wheeling soon or I will go not only into shock like you but fruking crazy, I have no one here to go with yet...any

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

You know AJ, that bumper would work really well as a hidden winch bumper.........
What do you think? Just torch out a slot in the center, extend the mounts and the edges a few inches and that's all you'd need. Just an idea.

Got some more pics of it done...

Also for those of you building your own stuff if you need pics of the mounts and stuff, this pic shows the "L" shaped brackets that bolt onto the front crossmember, adds some strength to the side mounts.
Image

The main mounts run back to that open hole in the frame rail, I circled where all the bolts attach and you can see I only have two in right now per side. The one all the way in the back goes completely through the frame rail. Can also see where the tow hooks are in this pic. I have a pattern for the mounts, with hole locations. If anyone needs it just let me know.

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

I dont know about getting someone to spray bedliner on it for you but my neighbor Hurclinered his front and rear tube bumpers and nerf bars on his CJ and the nerf bars on his chevy pickup. Its like $100 a gallon whick is more than enough for both front and rear bumpers, and 2 sets of nerf bars. I just went and got a gallon for $80 on clearance from K-mart to paint my homemade front bumper (almost finished), rear bumper (Got materals, still dreaming) and my rock rails (waiting to be hurclinered). I will try to get my friends camera to take pics of the Hurcliner on the bumpers and rails.

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

AJ, Would a brace running from bumper-mount to bumper-mount, under the frame-rails, do any good? I'm thinking it would add latteral strength as well as support against the frame-rails (in case of upwards force on bumper). I also think this would counter for the two-ply mounting holes in the front. Let me know what you think. I don't have any metal working tools or access to them, all I have are ideas.

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

For the template how should I do that? I mean I can take a pic of it and list measurements if you want or trace it and snail mail it.

You know I never thought about that but that's a good idea, maybe bolt it to the underside of the crossmember? I'll have to take a peek tomorrow at it. It would stiffen the whole front unibody even more this way without adding tons of weight.

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

I haven't dug too deep, but when I pulled my bumper/ skirt off it all looked pretty flimsy. I was surprised. I'm no structural engineer, so I'm sure the looks are deceiving.

I was thinking of the brace being part of the bumpers you make, sort of like a shelf in appearance. That should put stress on both rails equally, reducing the chances of unibody damage; using the unibody as it was designed to be used. I like the idea of bolts through it, too. That hardware you sent with mine is pretty hardcore. (I'll get pics posted tomorrow, I just finished painting/ drying it)

Re: Screw up turned out ok... front bumper.

I like the bold look of the bumper from the front. I also like the way the bumper doesnt harm the approach angle any. I drilled holes in the face of my bumper and put lights in it. The holes brake up the big bla look of the front bumper. And also helps to protect the lights when there in the bumper.
