OK, I'm the the type of person who likes to kill two birds with one stone and do things once. I'm also on a budget, but want to improve my Jeep.

So I want to find a tranny with a low range first gear and also would like heavier, slightly wider, axles.

Been thinkin, researchin, thinkin some more. Convinced myself that if I can locate a Scout II with 4speed (they are T18/Dana20), I can kill those two birds. It will be cheaper to mate the tranny to the engine, than another tranny to my t-case. As I search though, I have found conflicting info that i'm hoping to get straightened out.

1. Novak says that the IH T18s have some sort of "stud mounted style front face". Other write ups say that you simply swap the Ford gears/input into the IH case, get a bearing retainer and your good. ??

2. Speaking of Ford gears. Can I just swap 1st for 1st, or do I have to swap all of them. ???

3. I would use a Ford clutch disc, no?

Does anyone have experience with this type of swap? Anything I'm missing here? I'm thinking that if I can come up with the right donor for +- $200.00, I should be in good shape.

To answer your questions:

1. Not sure about the stud, my cases are Jeep and Ford. Could be the one on the driver side front.

2. AFAIK Yes you can swap all the Ford gears into the scout case. The granny low (6.32:1) and the other low (4.01:1) gears are not interchangeable unless you change the Cluster gears as well. If the Scout is a granny low, then you can swap in the Ford Input (front) shaft only, or you can swap all the ford gears (onto the scout shaft so that it will still fit the Tcase)

3. Depends on your flywheel. The ford input shaft uses a 1 1/16 X 10 spline. Scout is 1 1/8 X 10 I think. Anyway, if you have an 11" flywheel then a Ford truck clutch disc will work, if you have a 10.5" flywheel a Mustang or '76 jeep clutch disc will work. (By the way, the '76 Jeep clutch disc is available at Advance Auto Parts).

My swap is underway with both trannies partly dissasembled. The plan at the moment is to assemble in this order from the Engine (304 V8) back:
Novak Pilot Bushing (AMC / Ford)
'76 Jeep Clutch Disc
Existing ('75) clutch housing/pressure plate
'76 Clutch Fork and Throwout Bearing
All above inside a '80 T-176 Bellhousing
FSJ T18 with ford input shaft and gears
FSJ Dana 20 that came with the T18

If you go to the other thread, I listed some other swap stories and resources that helped me figure this stuff out. Also Novak is very helpful if you send email questions.

somebody will chime in here pretty quick i hope. there was a really good writeup/post on the various scout swap issues written a couple years ago. I can't think of the guys name to search for it. Matter of fact I think it was just reposted here a couple weeks ago???

Somebody has to know out there.

There is a ton of info there. If you mention that your planningon putting the tranny/tcase into a jeep, be ready for some people to flame the heck out of you. Don't let that keep you from checking it out. Overall I had really good luck using that site when I had my 73 Scout II.
