I'm running BFG Mud Terrains and they do reall well. Your limited on tire sizes though. Most of the guys that I wheel with at Pismo run Swamper ssr's. Stay away from the bias ply tires cus the sidewalls are too stiff and they don't squat when aired down. Also, stay away from any tire that is cut like a bogger, they take a hell of a lot of power to turn in the sand and unless you're running a big horsepower motor they'll just dig in. The Boggers do not have and cross treads cut in them eithor, if you get cross camber on the dunes you'll slide sideways so I recommend carrying a spare set of underware is you're gonna run em.' My next set of tires will be the Swamper ssr's. I wanna run the 37's and BFG doesn't make a tire that tall. I believe the biggest they sell in the mud terrains is a 33" for the 16" wheel. Also, stay away from any all terrain tire, if the sand is a little wet then they load up really bad and traction is lost. They suck in the sand.
I don't know what kind of sand these other guys are use to running in but at Pismo, there is not a hard bottom that you can dig down too, it's miles of sand. I typically run 10psi in the front and 8 in the rear with the mud terrains. At that pressure they squat really well and give me lots of traction. I don't know if you are accustome to airing down but it's a must for the dunes. Be careful though cuz it's easier to pop a tire off of the bead. I run the quick air 2 compressor with the 5 gallon tank for airing back up or reseating a tire if need be.
I've seen almost every tire ran in the dunes and these two seem to work the best. The guys in the club run everything from Jeeps to Toyotas, chevy's and RAM's and they work well on all of the trucks.
