Folks,

I've been watching eBay for a "Jeep Saginaw steering box" and I've not found anything for the past few months. There are other non-Jeep Saginaw steering boxes available on eBay.

Does anyone know what other steering boxes from other vehicles would be a suitable replacement? I'm not looking for any mod's to be done - hoping for a drop in place solution.

Thanks,

-John

The box on my '78 CJ is going to need replacement soon. My plan is to get a re-built from my local, VERY good, parts guy. I've rebuilt them myself in the past with mixed results; I really think it takes a couple of special tools. For a replacement, I've learned that a box from the same year Waggoneer will bolt in, with the possible exception of the pitman arm. The Waggie boxes have variable ratio, and are generally beefier.

You will be able to do the same thing I did. Find yourself one of the "4 bolt" boxes off of

73-77
Malibu
Monte Carlo
Cutlass Supreme
Grand Prix
Regal

They have always been "bolt ons" for the ones I've done. The only issue is the flare fittings for the hoses. You can change hoses or just buy flare to o-ring adapters. I'm not sure what year jeep went to o-rings but GM did it in 81.

And last but not least stay away from the camaro/firebird boxes. Yes they bolt on the same, but have a quicker ratio on some and with the SWB of the jeep it's a little too much.

81 is either the last year of the flare fittings or the first year of the o-rings. You'll just have to take a line out of yours to find out.
