I was wondering what a healty temperature would be for my AMC 258. Its in my '89 YJ, I have only owned the Jeep for a few months so I was
wondering around what temperature these engines run at. Mine usually shows 100 on the gauge, is this around what everyone else gets?

Thanks for your help

If that's the actual reading in F, it's way low. Your thermostat is probably stuck open. It should run around 185-195 degrees F. It may be lower at idle but when running at a higher rpm, it should be in the higher range.

205 here.....ya....you've either got a stuck thermostat ....or a disconnected temp sender. I imagine 195 would be your temp.

Figures don't lie ....... but liars sure do figure.
Luedee doesn't have a profile, but maybe he (or she) has a metric gauge. If so, it's running right where it should be.

Does your heater work? If it was only 100 degrees (F) it wouldn't put out any heat.

While you guys are on the subject of running temp. Does anyone know the running temp for a 225 V6? I am going to get a mechanical gauge so i would love to know the correct temp.
Thanks

My old yj was metric(canada)and the gauge always hovered around 100,and I did get some heat in winter. So the gauge is probably right.

Along the lines of running temps, I have a 76 CJ5 with 304 V8 with a Flex fan and at stoplights it gets up to about 185 F but at 55 mph it goes down to about 160 F. Is this correct?

My other vehicle is an Aircraft Carrier.

Thanks for your help guys. When I first asked the question I forgot the metric difference. My Jeep and I are Canadian, but I forgot it was important. As for not having a profile thats because I'm new to this message board, and Jeeping for that matter. I'll fill out the profile and thanks for your help again.

To Kahuna: The high temp is within reason, especially if you have a stock radiator. The drop you experience is related to the thermostat you are running. Are you running a low temp thermostat? It is possible that it is stuck wide open, I would suggest replacing it with a thermostat in the range of 185-195 degrees F. It's a cheap fix and will get you better gas mileage. If you would like to test your present thermostat, remove it, and look at it. It should be shut. Good luck
