Are you out there man? I'm really interested in dropping a 1.6 8v into my 85 SJ410. I'd like to know if you had any pitfalls and what I can do to avoid them. Is it just a matter of getting a 5-speed tranny and relocating the motor mounts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mort, do you have the 1L/4 speed, 1L/5 speed, or 1.3/5 speed?

The SJ410 frame and tub is identical to a later sami, except for engine and tranny frame mounts, and the
shifter hole in the tub is a couple of inches further back in the sami. Plus the frames spring mounts are
3.1" narrower overall on the SJ frame.

I was told the tranny mount will work between the 4sp and the 5 sp, but I don't know where the shifter
lands, or what the intermedate drive shaft legth will do. The U jounts will swap between the sami and SJ,
using different keeper clips, but the 4 speed yoke is an orphan. can't say what the 1L/5 speed yoke is, as
I haven't seen one, but I supect it uses the sami yoke.

The spring rates are 10% lighter on the SJ.

You will need the 1.6 harness unless you go weber, the 1L 410 ECM is an orphan

Hope that helps.

Outlaw,

Thanks for the reply. I have the 1 liter / 4-speed. I was pretty much aware of all the frame/drivetrain differences, and I'm mainly wondering if the 5-speed will bolt straight up. I've got one in my garage waiting to be installed. From your post it looks like it will go in with only minor, if any, mods. I was hoping to hear from Rui as he said he did this swap a couple of months ago and would post pics with a write-up. Maybe I should just try to find his email...... I've also read on the British Rhino-Riders board that a guy put the Sammy 1.3 in his SJ410 and all he had to do was relocate the motor mounts. I'm not sure if he started with the 4 or 5 speed though. It would be nice if that was the only mod needed. I know I'll probably need a Sammy hood as well, and a carb to avoid the wiring harness hassles....maybe a pony....or I know a guy who has a weber sitting in his garage....

Anyone else have any experience with this? There's plenty out there for the Sammy, not a lot on the SJ410 though....

All I had to do, was to relocate the motor mounts, BuT my Sj410 is from 1990.
I used the 1.3 transmission and 1.6 8v engine, 1.3 radiator, 1.3 starter.
