I'm putting a scout D44 front end in the front of my jeep wrangler. The specs for backlash vary from .005 to .010 inches. The question I have is what is better? More backlash (.010) or less (.005)? Does the fact it is a front axle and it is standard rotation being used in reverse, have an effect on the ideal amt. of backlash? I realize I can't tune the backlash to where I want it, as the specs are a desirable range, but what would be better; more or less. Thanks for your thoughts. Jamey Williams

We usually try for the middle of the range, .007" to .008". Too tight and you won't get proper oiling to the gear face, too loose, and the pattern goes off.
