OK check out the attached picture and PLEASE TELL ME what the heck I need to get this thing off!!! I went to every parts store in my are and they know nothing. I tell them that I need a hub nut socket and they come out with a 30-36mm socket...well that does me no good. The thing I need to get onto needs some sort of special tool, it is round with 4 slots in it(kind of hard to see in the pic but two slots are visible). Before someone mentioned something about these slots and that a special tool was needed because Chevy used the same thing...anyone know anything about this?? Thanks for all the help!!!

A 4wd spindle nut socket. Looks like a 3-4" long pipe with 4 tabs sticking about 1/4" out from the end (they go in the slots) and a 1/2" drive socket on the other. Man, any decent auto parts store should have one, but decent auto parts stores are getting harder to find. Maybe now that you know the name they will be able to find one, if not look around for the grumpiest, meanest, Oooooold parts guy you can find (try for quadruple digits). He'll probably call you an "ingnernt young punk" (even if your 50) , but he'll know what you mean. Darn near every Napa I've ever been in has one on the wall somewhere.

if you end up with some youngster when you go into the parts house ask specifically for this "a four pin spindle nut socket for a 73-87 chevy half ton four wheel drive front axle"
