Any good suggestions for removing the undercoating from the wheel wells of a CJ. Half of it has dryed out and is flaking off. Anybody know what undercoating is made of?
What is the best thing to reapply?
Has Jeep ever used a plastic fender liner?
Also, what's the chrome button at the bottom of the fender for?

Heya!

1. Anybody know what undercoating is made of?
Tis a rubber spray on compound that is made to last many years, but not the life of the beast.

2. What is the best thing to reapply?
Rock-guard works great, Rhino-linings are good too .. also you could pickup some roll-on liner (for truckbeds) and goop it on. While you are at it, do the interior of your CJ

3. Has Jeep ever used a plastic fender liner?
To my knowlege, not on a CJ .. why do you ask?

4. Also, what's the chrome button at the bottom of the fender for?
Chrome on a Jeep? How could they? :) Actually, I really don't know .. I gots the YJ and I can't find any extra chrome on mine.

Why I asked about the fender liner is because I've seen a number of CJ that have rusted through where the wheel boxes are welded to the side. I suspect the water spinning off the rear wheel is finding it's way into the seam. I think the seam sealers only last so long and then the spray gets in and you've got rust. If there were a plastic liner that fit into the wheel box then there wouldn't be any water being sprayed into the seams.
Just a thought.

Do you know a good body shop? My buddy owns one, and when rust starts up, he will clean it out, and use a rust converter (if its not bad) and then paint it, or in the case of the underbody, would re-line it with spray on undercoating. If its thick enough, it should last a very long time.

Another option would be to kill the rust, clean everything up very well, and seal it with fiberglass sheets .. a couple options ..

Like someone said, the roll-on bedliners can be used. I used Herculiner, you can buy it at Wal-Mart, and you can cover anything with it. I did the whole tub, tailgate, nerf bars, and rocker panels. Its pretty cool stuff.

Did you have to strip the old stuff off or can you just put it on over top?

The best way to remove old under coating is to use a pressure washer, not the kind at the local car wash, use one of the gas
powered portable ones. Don't blast anything painted though, it'll strip it! Blast off any undercoating that will come off and reapply
the new stuff over what remains.
