working on installing the header...

got the heat sheild off a few minutes ago and started looking for the manifold bolts/nuts... i counted 7... in the rear lower part of the manifold where i assume there should be a bolt, i find only a hole... got underneath the car to check it out, sure enough, no bolt there... the manifold is actually thicker at this point as well... am i missing something there? whats going on?

i don't want to remove the old manifold untill i can install the new one, and if i'm missing a bolt, that won't be good for the header gasket... would i be able to find a bolt like this at the hardware store?would i be what type of bolt would this be? anything special?

thanks for any input

Steve, is the stud MISSING? Broken? Is this the rear, lower stud? Is it a 1.6 motor? 16 valve?

More info, please! If this IS a 1.6/16, the header isn't thicker at that point, even though the original exhaust manifold WAS thicker there, so you should have a spacer that goes on the stud, before the nut.

bob, if there is supposed to be a stud there, then yes, its missing

it is the rear lower on a 1.3 carbed motor... i'm still working on cutting my exhaust pipe before the header so that i can get the manifold out and take a look at it... as of right now i've only got it loose (no bolts holding it on), but the pipe is still keeping it in place

i'm gonna go back out and work on it some more, i'll check back in 15 or 20 minutes

thanks

OK, Steve. On the 1.6, the lower rear stud isn't threaded all the way, that's why you need a spacer when you put the header on. It sounds like you've got a missing stud. Not a pleasant prospect - is it GONE, or BROKEN? Anybody else? I'm working from memory of my last header install on a 1.6/16 here...

Are we talking 1.3 or 1.6 engine?

If 1.3, I just took a look at a spare manifold in the garage, and then at my Thorley installation...

According to the FSM, there is supposed to be a stud there. I have a bolt.

I guess someone forgot to put it back in the last time the unit was worked on. Hopefully this is an accident as opposed to a broken bolt lurking at the bottom of that hole.

Hey it ran okay without it??? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

The bolts/nuts are all metric, and have grade makings on the ends. Take one of the other nuts and bolts with you to the store and obtain bolts/nuts with the same grade markings

Blank on top is the weakest. Numbers 4 through 8 indicate strength with 4 as weak and 8 as strong. There are marking patterns on the top of bolts, too but the FSM is vague about their meaning.

The reason why the manifold is thick there is that there is a passage in the area. Note the short bent pipe in the same place on your Thorley.

Hope this helps!

still not sure... almost done cutting the pipe... i don't think its a stud though mainly because there are no other studs on the bottom... only 2 on the top... could be completely wrong, but that makes sense to me...

back to work

Well then, like Ack says, you're in luck. Just get a new bolt, and slap it in there! You're lucky! The 1.6/16 is all studs, and that particular nut is a killer to install! You can get in 1/12th of a turn at a whack with a good open end wrench, and a box end won't work 'cause of the little pipe thingy above it...

Cheers
Bob

ps - I just got my new Calmini header for may 2-door Sidekick - I've sent a question off to Rae, if she wants me to do a write-up on the install, with photo's and all. If not, I guess I'll have to get a home-page here, and put the stuff up here...

I used "HELP" water pump fan studs (whole thing is threaded, thread one on unit, then put a nut on). I can't remember what the thread size was and they have been holding up very well over 8mos or so...

I'm LOCKED!

its all good, i went to NAPA and they guy there found me a bolt that matched the others, and then he didn't even charge me for it... it really made my day

anyhow, i just got out of class, so now i'm back out to the driveway to put the thorley on... then hopefully tommorrow i'll wake up early and go to the exhaust shop

installing thorley - new question

just put the new manifold on and something came to mind... i seem to remember someone saying not to put a gasket (or maybe even a manifold/header) with round tubes on a head with square holes...

whats the deal with this?

any info? i assume that all the thorleys that ya'll have have round tubes and all of ya'lls zooks have square holes, but i'm just curious

thanks

Re: installing thorley - new question

Funny you mention that, but I THINK my 1.6/16 has ROUND holes on the block... Guess I'll know when I do my second one this weekend! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Re: installing thorley - new question

Do it following the Thorley instructions. They work. At least they worked for me...
