Hi,
I just bought an '83 Jeep CJ-7. Lifted 6", running 35 x 14.50. Lockers front and rear. I am using the jeep as my daily driver but am wanting to remove the locker from the rear end to avoid the on street problems associated with this locker. I have never attempted dissasembly of a differnetial before and was hopeing I could do it myself with not to much trouble. I am decently mechanicly minded and can get most tools. Any help?
Thanks

Jacob

Removing it depends a lot on the type of locker it is. Some lockers like lockrights can be removed relatively easily with mechanical knowledge........BUT if you have a detroit or other locker which replaces the carrier then it'll be a pain in the butt and probly not something you'd want to tackle yourself.

It's my bet that if you do swap back to an open diff you will kick yourself later. But in a daily driver....

Here are some pages on the subject of the AMC20 and general information about diff rebuild.

It really isn't that hard, you will need a couple of less than common tools like a good in/lb torque wrench and a big breaker bar. It does take lots of time installing checking removing then adjusting and start over.

Good Luck

I daily drive 15 miles each way with a lockright in the rear. You'll get used to it.

My CJ7 isn't my daily driver but I drive it alot on the street and it has a Detroit in the rear. Yes it makes the tires chirp in corners and likely wears the tires, clunks and bangs from time to time but that's why I love it so much.

In sand, mud, dirt and snow I'm just damn glad it's in there.

Nothing beats backing out of a parking spot at WalMart and getting it all wound up and then timing it just right so that it pops just as I go by the ugly woman beating her kid and watching her jump.

Does that make me a bad person?

Forgot to mention that I have an auto so it is almost invisible to me except the normal torque steer when accelerating and slowing.

Another vote for leaving it in. You get used to it. It's really not all that bad.

But something else to consider that I haven't seen mentioned, Even if it is a lockright, depending on what gears you're running, you may have to pull the ring gear to remove the cross shaft. a little more involved. then there is setting the spiders back in, which can be a PIA if you haven't done it before.

I was going through the very same situation, I wanted to take the locker out of the back of my CJ-8, but didn't because I couldn't find an open diff that I could afford. i am so glad that I didn't take it out. I would have been kicking myself for a good long time... Till I put one back in. You will get used to it, and you will probably come to love it. Leave it in.
