I am wondering if there is any downside to removing the shortest leaf of a 5 leaf pack?

This is a 3" lift on the rear of a CJ7. It has always sat too high, and I figure just taking 1 leaf out should work. I've attached a pic of removing the 12" leaf.

I did that over 2 years ago. Haven't had any problems and took a little sharpness out of bumps.

I did the same on my fiberglass cj to take the edge off the bumps and it has been 2 years with no sags .

I'm an experienced leaf spring modifier, and in consultation with my moonguy-in-charge
of suspension issues, here is our take on this situation.
LEAF SPRINGS do have a job to do besides support the Jeep and make it easy on you when you hit a bump, and that is CONTROLLING WINDUP. Since there is no other means of controlling reaction to rear axle torque, the leaf spring takes care of it. The short leaves help transfer the torque to the longer leaves by pressing on them several inches from the center of rotation. If you guys are going to single-out your rear springs and get closer to a mono-leaf system, then maybe you should consider attaching some torque arms on that piggy to help control windup. On the Model 20 axles it would also help those thin tubes last longer.

How about flattening the bottom leaf so that it has less (or no) arch and carries less load? Or flattening just the back end, so it still acts to prevent axle windup, but has half the rate until it contacts the next leaf? A compromise rather than removing it altogether.
