I have an '83 Scrambler, and am looking to replace my lockout hubs. I need some input as to which brand would be best . . . quality, cost, torture, etc...
Who's dun it? What'd ya do? and Why? Thanks!

I hear Superwinch makes a good replacement for the 5 bolt, don't know about Warn. I have heard of people swapping the front rotors with a '78-'79 CJ to get the stronger 6 bolt hubs, but I swapped out the whole axle to get them (added benefit). I used to have probelms with my hub bolts loosening, so I removed the bolts and replaced them with studs, a huge difference. They never loosened and never broke. I grenaded an axle and ripped shackles in half, no problems with the 5-bolts, but I think I was just lucky.

I run Superwinch on my 86CJ7. I also swapped to the older 6 bolt knuckles for added strength. I've pounded the Jeep about twice a
month on some very rough trails and never had a problem.

Speaking of what JEEPN said, re grenading axles etc. I've thought alot about this subject and the advisability of "upgrading" my hubs. If you run bigger tires and do much hardcore wheeling you might want to retain the stock hubs. Breaking an axle or diff on the trail is a giant PITA, replacing a blown hub is a few minute operation. If something blows, make your weak link something easy to replace, CJDAVE referred to it in mechanical terms, a shear pin. Plus, an extra hub or 2 takes up a lot less room. Just my point of view form someone that does most of his wheeling on hardcore slickrock trails.

Thanks, Superwinch sounds good. I've heard that "MileMarker" is supposed to be the toughest, but I've never seen them... anyone using that brand?

I've had really good luck with Superwinch hubs on my 83 CJ7. 5 bol hubs, locked running 33" swampers. They are reasonably priced (I think about $70.00 pair when I bought mine) All metal construction and a good warranty.

The only issue I have is with the hub bolts loosening, and that is more an issue of the front locker, more then anything else... Grade 8 bolts and locker washers seems to have resolved most of this, though studs are the best solution.

I run MileMarker premium hubs on my '77 cj-5. No complaints, and they stood firm while I gernaded an inner axle and u-joint. (still want to know how I did that) I found out on a sand hill, fortunately I had a locker and was able to get out 3wd...
The local jeep 4x4 shop doesn't do anything superwinch, not sure why, I just haven't seen any there, the MM's were cheaper than warn, and have held up just fine for me, an I ain't too gentle on them either.

Another post about grenading axles, etc. Hmmm, is what I've been preaching for months starting to make sense to anybody?
Just a thought. /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

cjjeepercreeper, good idea. I never thought of a shear pin, only making everything bulletproof so the rocks beneath the tires would crumble before the drivetrain. We had a guy in our club though, built 360 and lotta power, sheared off ALL the bolts that hold the hub on. No one thought to bring a drill and some easyouts, so he was screwed. His mechanic also hooked up both ARB's to one switch, so he couldn't unlock one end. It was in the snow on the Sunday River trail, embarrassing towing his $60,000 (yes, I meant 60K) jeep out with a $500 MB.

Everyone needs to be humbled once and a while...

If he could afford a $60,000 vehicle he shoud have called a helicopter to just lift the vehicle out! /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

Thanks- I know MileMarkers are a little more $$, but I'd rather go with something that's bullet proof if I can!. I had the same mishap on a sand hill. A guy in a Toy with super swamper made some big ruts as he dug a hole trying to get up, and couldn't. When I hit that spot the sudden jump and instant torque on the rear axle was just too much. I destroyed the ring and pinion, and a detroit locker!
Ouch! I drove out on my front wheels and towed her home. Fixed now, ready to do it again!
