Mississippi must be better about the wave than most states, but even we have our bad jeepers. heres a post i made earlier in a response to Gigolo. This guy I'm talking about really sucks, i think we'd all agree. (but it IS a YJ, so i guess it DOES suck, haha just kiddin H8):
Hey Gigolo, you dont get the Jeep wave over there? Hell, here in Mississippi, we get the Jeep wave, and then theres the just plain ole 4x4 wave. But the worst is David Klofenstein. He wont give the Jeep wave to anyone cause he thinks hes better than anyone, when actually, only his Jeep is. 1994 YJ, supercharged 350, over 1200 HP, 10 ton rockwells, full cage, ridiculous lift, 44" boggers (street tires) 48"x31" mud skidders (mud tires. Pretty much hes real rich and spent over 40,000 bucks. BUT he didnt build it, he BOUGHT everything. He hasnt done any of his own work, Joe over at Joe's 4x4 did it all. Nice Jeep, bad guy.

Well, it has been my experience that Jeeper Attitude doesn't always come from the do-it-yourself Jeepers. There are the ones who have to buy "everything" becuase they don't have the mechanical know-how to get the job done, but they still want to run with the big dogs. Some people go a little over board, but what exactly would be considered over board? Every Jeep is built to someone's own taste and what he thinks it should be. That is one of the things that make a Jeeper a Jeeper, because we do this to our Jeeps. We are in a "club". Modifying a Jeep is what we like to do, whether or not you did it yourself or had someone else do it for you. I can see your point though.

Damn it Andy, you better quit making fun of my YJ or Im gonna take up an attitude with all of you bug eye Jeepers. Hehehehe,
Hey I believe the Jeep wave needs to be taught, to all of the ignorant ones, by those of us who know.
For example, when I first moved to Reno, Nv for a 24 Hour Fittness project last year, NO ONE WAVED to me, I mean NO ONE!!. Why????? I have no idea. But the town had more hiogh dollar Warn XCL suspension YJ's than I have ever seen. I had never seen more than a couple before I got there, but there had to be more than a dozen in town. To a man, none of them were hard core(as I would consider hard core). As I began to meet them individually, I found that most of them had no idea what an SOA was all about, and kinda looked down on my hillbilly suspension. So,....I held my tongue in parking lot conversations, and invited myself to go wheeling with them and thier friends. It didnt take me long to on the trails to change thier perception of what extreme wheeling was really all about. With that came returned Jeep waves, from anyone I wheeled with and thier buddies, who had heard of the YJs prowess. That part was easy, we wheeled, we bonded, we waved at each other. But here is where it gets complicated. I noticed that they still, even in conversations, considered themselves(with the exception of me, maybe), as their own group. We have to all consider ourselves Jeepers, I love the comradrerie of Jeeping. But I even find myself, looking at TJ's sometimes with a bit of a chip on my shoulder, due to the fact that many of the new owners consider their rigs more capable than my YJ(even in stock form) due to the sales crap that was fed them by the salesman. And if I dont wave, well naturally they dont wave. Now CJ's what can you say, they are a legacy, and I love to wheel with them(I love to wheel with TJ's also), but sometimes they dont wave back, probably because I have square headlights. So I decided, when I got to Reno, that I was gonna shove that old paw out there and wave to all Jeeps, by the time I left Reno, I would say that 75% of the Jeeps I would wave to would wave back. Its contagiouse, so just wave, who cares if they wave back, maybe they didnt see you, just wave again, and when you talk to em, on a trail, tell them to wave too. I strongly believe in the wave and it will catch on in your own area if you make it. The ribbing between models should only be in jest,(even if the the other owner doesnt know it yet).

i am actually a little flawed.... it has been toooooo long since a jeep was my daily driver... my wife sez she gets the wave all the time(go figure...a chick in a lifted tj on base), but i have found that i actually forgot to wave a couple times in the tj!!!. i am soo ashamed.. the tj doesnt feel like a jeep when the hard top is on and it drives all straight...no v-8 rumble, no swamper howl, no speedometer in the middle of the dash...
i have also seen the "i'm better than you" jeepers.. they all drive lifted tj's here... and they all breakk a ot of parts. everything is bolted on, and expencive....not exactly like my jeep...everything is home made and cheap.. i didnt even shake the sufacce rust off my axles...i dont grind welds, and i am looked down upon like my jeep is inferior to these 4 banger tj's with 33's and lockrights beacuse of it

seems like up here in Maine, jeepers just about fall out of the window reaching out to wave ( a little exagerated, but definitely a friendly wave amongst jeepers though and all with big tires!)

Down here in FL the wave seems to be going strong. Back in '97 when I got my YJ I didn't know what the wave was, but all these people just waved at me like they knew me, so I waved back. Then I found the Jeep Wave article on Dirt-Road.com and was like "ohhh...I get it, duh! Its like the Harley guys- cool!" Then I began waving at everyone first and just enjoying the camarderie. They must not recognize me in the Buick though, and the power windows are so slow, and let out so much AC, that I just wave uselessly from inside anymore /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Sycho,
the Buick thing is funny, I find myself quite a bit driving down the road in the motor home or Ford, and when I see a Jeep, I just throw out a big ol wave, then when they dont wave back, I say to myself whats the matter with these Jeep guys, then I realize Im in the MotorHome, Duhhh !

Jeff thats good about the motorhome,,, I have had Jeeps pass me in the motorhome when pulling my Jeep and give a honk and a big ol wave,,, seems that when you pass motorhomes pulling Jeeps there is a lot of waving going on there as well.

i think that we need to enjoy the wave while we still can. the way this country is heading, it is only a matter of time until jeepers are sued for descrimination for not waving to EVERYONE!!! then what will we have??

There is not alot of Jeep left on mine, (8' of frame rail, and the top 18" of the body),I don't know if I should wave, so usually, I just put my middle finger up...works for me ; )

If it comes with instructions, then it's not what the pros use.

Here in OR, or at least the town I'm in, the wave is pretty week. We have a lot of punk kids driving lifted TJ's their parents bought them and some hot girls with bute little TJ's that their parents also bought them. When I wave I usually get a weird look and that's about it. Only the older guys do it. I agree with Jeff. YJ owners seem to have a bit of a chip on our shoulders. TJ drivers usually think their rigs are more capable and more like a REAL Jeep. And CJ owners don't think it's a real Jeep because of the square headlights. It's frustrating. I've become real bad at doing the wave simply because of the stuck up people driving their Jeeps. But I'm going to start waving again. Screw all the stuck up Jeepers that think YJ's aren't real. Hell, most of the people in my town don't know what I'm talking about when I say I've got a YJ. They're like, "What's that?" And then I through in the term TJ and they still don't know. And then I say it's a Wrangler and they're all over it:)

Here in the suburbs of NYC, (Long Island to be more specific) I wave but have noted a variation of the "Jeep Wave" here. Between my CJ's tendency to wander on the highway, it's top speed of 60 mph, and the mud obscuring my side view, (and occasionally my rear view) mirrors, I'm noticing a lot of, shall we call it, "The NY One Fingered Jeep Wave!"

I cheerfully return this gesture of goodwill, but this usually encourages other motorists, (Jeepers & non_Jeepers) to inquire about my mother, tell me where to go, and what to kiss!

Oh well, if you see me chuggin' along and wave, with one finger or five, I'll be sure to wave back!!

I live out side chicago seems like most of the "kids" a group I'm included in don't wave except for me and a couple others, other day I was in my tj and there's this beat to sh!t yj w 2 metal head guys in it I waved at them (probably the 1st time ever a tj waved at them) and get this great reaction out of them. It does seem most of the waves are from older people. There's some kid at my school w/ a tj doesn't even wave just looks at you funny, havn't found him in the halls yet to make fun of him for being a poser jeeper yet. Also teach people to wave, I know when I bought my yj the guy at the dealer was a jeeper and told me about it. If you ever sell a jeep make sure the buyer knows to wave.

I live in Daytona Beach, FL. I seem to hardly ever not get a wave back. I think most people owning a Jeep know about the wave. I don't know about everywhere else but the young ones are doing it too. I see people in brand new TJ's with temp plates who are doing it. Everyone wants to feel like they fit in somewhere. I say make it your responsibility to push the wave on those who are reluctant. All my friends, even the ones with out Jeeps, know about it because I explained it.Besides it's for "us"....if they don't wanna play screw 'em

I agree with H8. It's contagious. But like most things the bad from (nonwaveitis) is even more contagious. We must do our part to support the Jeepwave, lest it be lost to the urban blight.

I'm on here so much, I have carpal tunnel reader syndrone.

The dilemma I have is this: The more-stock of any two Jeeps should initiate the wave. But what if they don't? Should I wave anyway, just to keep it alive? It's like a fight between protocol and keeping a tradition around.

Otherwise, being from south Louisiana, I usually wave at EVERYONE anyway. When we moved to our neighborhood here in Floriduh, no-one waved. They're all yanks, and aren't familiar with the concept ;) However, less than a year later, I've noticed they all wave now, even if I'm not looking! Some even toot the horn! Being friendly is definitely addictive. Keep it up - persistence will pay off!

To be honest....I'm gonna get reamed for this one...

I think the Jeep wave is corny. I guess maybe cause in Jersey, the people who mainly give it are, like previously stated, driving around in stock YJ's and TJ's, with subwoofers blaring....

Just doesn't make sense...plus it's not even a wave generaly, it's just lifting your fingers from the wheel, making a half-assed attempt at a wave....

Well, bring it on, I'm ready..

I can totally understand the Jeep wave, but it leaves me with feeling of embarrasment and not to mention anger when i throw the wave and the other guy/girl does not respond. I have even got a few Toyota waves when i used to drive my lifted '88, but not until now can experience the genuine Jeep wave...the one and only 4x4 wave... be proud whether you bought it or built it.... its a Jeep, like no other. Those who say it is a lifestyle arent lying. i got in my Toyota the other day, which has sat for about 3 or 4 months and it just isn't the same. I felt naked. Throw the wave!

Mr. Reitman. You from Medford or Meeedford Lakessss???? Maybe that's the reason. Down where the mud and sand are in NJ, not too far from you, about 90% "jesture" initally or return it. It is a Jeep thing....maybe you wouldn't understand ?? BTW, that is "by the way" in computer talk, who the he77 goes to Huntingdon, WV to school? Those WV guys must have you for lunch. Don't they offer basket weaving 101 at Burlington Community College? Oops, sorry. Does there even exist a Burlington County Community College? Well that was my best shot. I didn't know about the wave until I got a Jeep and hooked up with this BBS. My dad had a Honda Mini Trail 70cc motorcycle for his camper. I used to ride it to the grocery store when we were camping and back home around the neighborhood. 200lb+ on something a little bigger than a minibike must have been a sight but it was fun. I guess it was just Harley riders would give the "fist up in the air" sign to each other but I would get it all the time and just giggle to myself. I don't have subwoofers, two regular woofers(Dollie and Pepper), in my CJ so when you come down to Turnersville I'll wave at you.

Here in Maryland its alive and starting to get better, I occasionally get a wave from a TJ but more often from a YJ, not really to many CJ's running around (only see when when I'm in my DD (ford) ).

What I do get a lot of times when I am driving my CJ is this look of envy / confusion
usually happens when I pull up next to another jeep and they hear the V8/dual exhaust rumble and think "hey why does'nt my jeep sound that cool,"

Oh well just my ego talking

John
