Rear Storage

looking for some ideas for storing gear in the rear compartment. As you can see from the pic things just kind of lay loose in there, and not having a system prevents me from carrying additional gear on a regular basis. I have a couple of .50 caliber ammo cans I was think of incorporating, but I'm also looking for other ideas...

Whatever you do get that hi-lift tied down or put a cargo cage wall up to keep yourself from getting drilled in the back of the head in the event of an accident. Loose objects can fly all over in an accident and if that thing hits you you'd be dead.

I built storage boxes on each side extended about 2 inches beyond the wheel wells running back to about an
inch from the rear hatch. The front panel is angled with the back seat. This allows rear seat usage. I then
covered them with carpet that was a similar match to the rear deck. Added locks to doors on the top of the
boxes, which provide a slight degree of security.

You can upload your pics right here on the board all you have to do is click on the box that says "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file" then browse your pc for the pic and add it to your post. I am sure plenty here would also like to see the pics.

I would highly suggest getting one of those Husky cargo liners.
Its the first thing I bought, and i've put all kinds of crap in the back of the jeep.
I use a big rubbermaid storage bin in the back for jumper cables, extra fluids, work gloves, tarps,
and my rain suit. I also have a couple ammo boxes for other goodies such as tow straps and shackles,
and my various tools. I keep my machete, hatchet, and bow saw in the compartment under the rear seat.
I'll post a pic later on. I have my hi-lift mounted on the roof most of the time with a home-made mount that is mounted to my THULE roof rack. I'm going to try and attach the pics of the mount to this post. It's made out of 1/8" thick 1" flat stock and a 1/2" bolt with plumbing
washers (rubber for a cusion) Oh, and the bolts are galvanized for rust protection. I have yet to test them in winter, but i think they will be alright for a while. I'm sorry for the dark pics, the only time I could take them was at night, and I couldn't get my jeep into the garage because my friends TJ is in there (we're installing a 3" lift) yippee...more pics of the interior to come.........

All examples posted here are good but what about the idea of using the roof rack. What I do is I have one of those Sears "X-Cargo" plastic roof carriers. When taking the Cherokee camping, I pack the tools, fluids, tire iron, inflator, bottle jack, etc. in the carrier with the tent and other light camping gear. The heavier camping gear and cooler goes into the rear cargo space. I pack the carrier so the vehicle recovery/repair stuff is on the passenger side of the carrier so I can get to it without standing close to the traffic lane.

When I get to the campsite, the carrier gets staked down on the ground next to the tent, with the camping gear stored in it. The recovery/repair items then go into the rear cargo area of the XJ, secured with "bungeefication".

Yeah, I've got the spare on a swing-away on the bumper.Makes a huge difference. My platform is a two-piece number. The front half comes out in a minute so I can use the seat, but if you use the seat a lot then a higher platform might be better. I've seen an XJ on the web that had a platform going across the top of the wheelwells. It had a couple right angle brackets to hold it in place. It covered the entire cargo area from the back of the rear seat to the hatch. Besides having a lot of hidden storage space it looked like a good place to mount big speakers. 5/8 plywood works good. Also, Jag, I just installed a Custom 4x4 rear bumper, like you were thinking of. It's a really nice piece, but it's off-set to the left about 3/8 in. I'm going to have to take it off and redrill the mounts. I guess all Jeeps are slightly different. Otherwise, the bumper is great, and you can get it with a tire carrier and 2" receiver.

james-
the idea of a roof rack is good...but not for everyday use. there are things that i want to carry with me all the time, everywhere i go (tools, jack, blankets, straps, etc).
besides, right now i have the mopar roof mounted tire carrier up there anyway....
