Thats just another thing I dont really like about Chiltons...get a Haynes manual(I have both, and I hate the chiltons index)...it talks about how to replace that rear output seal, as well as others. I am getting ready to do mine also. I have a model 20 and once the nut is off, should be able to knock the yoke off with a soft hammer to get to the seal...I dont think (or dont expect) it to be a very difficult job.

If your xfer is a 231, be careful that it's not actually the output yoke that is leaking. I replaced my seal, only to find out the it was the yoke. A dab of silicone at the center of the yoke stopped the leak, and was a lot quicker and easier...wish I had tried that first. Good luck.

Just drop the drive shaft and it's easy to replace. I just did my 90 a few weeks ago. Clamped vise grips on the lip of the old seal and tapped it out with a hammer. Then I carefully tapped the new one in. I can't remember the cost exactly, but was around $10.
