Is this a good recovery point (for rear). The author suggests fixing it with grade 8 bolts all the waythrought the frame rail.

1. Yes... with a "but"...
2. I would not do it unless I:
a. Installed crush tubes in the frame,
b. Welded the crush tubes to 3/16" plate, on both sides of the frame,
c. Welded the plates to the frame.
d. To prevent the frame from being crushed,
e. And spread the load to the frame.

Yup, my thoughts exactly... just wanted to confirm.
It's a bit too much of the work, I think. But, tell me one thing... If you look at those custom rear bumpers with recovery points on'em... They do attach to the frame pretty much the same way this hook (upper photo) does. Like, there are 3-4 bolts per frame rail, all the way throught the frame, on both rails. Those hold up the rear bumper. Which has the hook attached. Basically, the load ghets distributed to both rails, that's the only difference.

Or am I wrong?

2. You don't crush or bend one frame rail by doing that...
3. If you can pull from the middle, between the frame rails, so much the better.
4. Even with thses aftermarket bumpers... I still favor sleeving the holes and using backing plates.

Hmmm... How's about installing rear tow points to that crossmember? Would that be any good?

Yeah just like my mate did

I then yanked him out of a mud hole and the whole crossmember came clean off including his tank skidplate and the tank strap then went on to puncture his tank... NOT a good idea!!!
