I have a 96 xj. I think I have an 8.25 rear end. I tried to find some pictures on the internet of the two possible rear ends and I think mine is an 8.25. Is there a sure way of telling? Vin codes? If I have the 8.25 how do I tell if I have a trac lock factory limited slip? Would having one affect being able to install a lock right in the rear end. Thanks for any information anyone can provide. I am ready to order a lock right but I want to get the correct one. Thanks again.

not sure about lockers, but on your Diff cover there should be a small metal tag under one of the bolts that hold the diff cover on, on there will have the info about the diff and gear ratios, limited slip ect...

I would like to thank everyone for the help. I have looked at the pages with pictures and I have come to the conclusion I have the 8.25. Now all I need to figure out is which locker or posi to get. Thanks again.

There is really only one out there for the 8.25. That is the "powertrax no-slip traction system". It is an auto locker that functions as a limited slip initially but goes to full lock when there is a predetermined difference between the rear wheel speeds. I have made alot of inquiries of shop owners who install and wheel the powertrax as well as individual xj owners. I have heard of two failures and the folks have said that powertrax sent them a new unit with no questions asked. Of the others out there runnin the unit, all have nothing but good things to say about it. I am ordering one for my '98 xj and will have it and new gears installed sometime in February of this coming year. If you haven't gotten one by then I will let you know what I think about it shortly thereafter.
Detroit is supposed to be offering sometime later next year their ELECTRAC on demand locker for the 8.25 but they have not said specifically when.
