ok i was reading in JU this morning and i say a 53' flatfender jeep with ford 9's front and rear.......i know they use the 9" center with D60 knuckles and stuff....but what is the advantage of doing this then just running a D60 upfront.............plus john sumner(?) from WMS i think is running 14 bolts front and rear, again what is the advantage to doing this when you use the D60 outers and stuff

help the stupid

The stock 9" housing offers a slight ground clearance advantage over a stock d60 housing,,,,,,But a shaved d60 factory housing can have the same clearance,,,,,,,and a aftermaket d60 housing can have better clearance then a stock 9".

The guys at Wagoner run HUGE tires and require alot more axle to handle them. Casey told me, they are also using Rockwell knuckles and outter on steering 14 bolt's.

ok i see what your saying
but would it not be cheaper to just shave a d60 then to the 9"/d60 deal with custom axle shafts that you cant get at a junkyard or off the shelf item?????

or just do rockwelles then having to make custom shafts for the 14 bolt/rockwell combo?????

hhhuuummmmm maybe i can save up some cash and do a d60 center with volvo portal ends.....nnaaaaaaaaa to much work and not enough wheeling

what other combos are out there that people are using?????

later

It's just another axle option out there. Currie makes a RR 9" centersection to gain some more clearance under the 3rd and get the drive shaft up compared to a std. 9".

I see your point completely, I've never been able to justify building a 9"/60 hybred. Running a built D60 front and 14bolt rear has worked fine for me.

The front 14bolts that WMS builds are able to run a lower suspension then a Rockwell axle would require. The top loader axles like the Rockwells have 8 inchs of housing on top of the axle along with driveshaft clearance issue , which needs alot more lift to clear the motor .

"Don't they flip the centersection when running up front? This would give a very high pinion.
Maybe there is more clearance over a d60 centersection"

if you flip the center section, the gears will turn backwards...this may cause a bit of binding in the x-fer case

Due to the way Ford designed the 9" it actually gets stronger with deeper gears. 4.56 gears are stronger than 3.55 gears on a 9".

Plus, you can get gears up to 7:1 for the stock 9" third member.

The 9" has the advantage of not having a cover to dent as well.

As far as using GM's 14 bolts front and rear a lot of people do it because they are cheap to gear to 5.13s, are nearly bulletproof, lockers are cheap, and they have large diameter axleshafts stock.
