I have an 86 cj7,and I was wondering what kind of rear end it has in it. there used to be a info page on offroad.com that would tell me, but I can't seem to find it anymore. I know most of them have amc 20's but some also had dana 44's, and I just need to know the how to tell the difference. Thanks in advance, Ben.

The model 20 has a round diff cover and the 44's aren't.

If it looks like this, it's a Model 20.

The Dana 20 looks like half a basketball except smooth. The D44 has a protrusion for ring gear clearance that is very obvious. In other words, the rear cover is form fitted around the ring gear on the D44. The D20 cover is just a big round 1/2 a basketball.
