Re: 258 blocks

Are all AMC 258 short blocks the same? I know that the heads changed in 1981, but are they different except for the valve cover? I want to build a 258 engine with the 4.0 head and was wondering if certain 258 blocks are more desirable than others to build on. I know where I can get a early 70s 258 engine from a Gremlin cheap. Is this lowerend as good as any other? Thanks for any help.

Re: 258 blocks

I replaced an '80 with an '83 that I rebuilt. The '80 had 1/2" head studs, the '83 had 7/16". As far as the
lower end, I think they all had seven main bearings.

You might want to check out here http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/ .......I'm not sure that it covers the block end of things......but it's a pretty thorough write up on the 4.0 head convertion. It's my understanding that the blocks are virtually identical with the exception of motor mount and oil filter locations.
