Well, I swapped out my NP203 for the NP205. I hoped it would eleviate the clunk I had when I shifted into drive but the clunk is still there. It sounds like it's coming from the tranny (TH350). I also get a rattle coming from inside the tranny when I let off the throttle on the interstate. The tranny shifts fine and was rebuilt before I bought the truck but who knows how good of job they did. I don't know much about the internal parts of a tranny, any ideas on what it could be? I've ruled out driveline issues because they are both new with new ujoints.

Also how much slop (if any) is normal for the rear end? I noticed that there is a little slop in mine and didn't know if I should be concerned. TIA.

As for teh clunk, that has plagued chevys for years, all the 90's trucks would do it too. Not exactly sure if yours is the same, but 90's ones have teh slip shaft (cause i forget the actual name) driveshaft fitting at the rear of the tcase, and the slack between teh splines makes that noise. To eliminate it, there is some special grease you can pack teh splines with that isn't supposed to dissolve, but it doesn't last long enough for it to be worth the trouble for most ppl. Hopefully this helps until someone with your year truck can verify this.....

Well since he had a 203 and now has a 205 I am pretty sure he does not have a slip yoke all though the later years of the 205 did have them. So that is most likely ruled out. As for the amout of slop for the rear I dont know. Did you go over every thing and make sure its tight like the converter?

Yea, everything seems tight. And the clunk when I put it in gear doesn't sound like a bad ujoint would sound. It sounds higher pitched, similar to hitting two wrenches together if that makes sense. It's strange. The tranny has a shift kit in it and works perfectly fine other than the funny sounds. Maybe I just won't worry about it until it croaks.

As for the rear, the slop isn't noticable when driving. I could just feel a little (about 1/4 of an inch or so) when moving the yoke back and forth with the driveline off. I'm probably just being paranoid since I've had to fix about everything else on it lately!

make sure the tranny is bolted to the engine and tranny mount tightly...tranny mount might also be bad
