ranger TD q\'s

Hi all - I normally post to the toy, and Zuk boards, but I've got some q's about the Ford minitruck TD"s. I dont know if they were commonly available in the US, but I've seen 5-6 around here, and have gotten 3 different sets of answers from the owners about exactly what the mechancial layout is. ( the 3 I've been told are BMW 2.4 6 cylinder TD, Mazda 4 cylinder 2.0 NA, and just spoke to an old guy who says his is a 4 cylinder Mitsubishi 2.3 TD)

so q's
1) what diesels were available in the ranger minitrucks as stock?
2) what driveline/s were they hooked up to? ( ie, is the BMW diesel connected to a ZF transmission, and ZF t-case?)
3) what sort of performance numbers do these trucks get? (0-100 kph, mpg, etc)

I'm interested 'cause I'm looking for some transmission / transfer case options for my Benz diesel setup. I know from prior work that the ZF boxes attached to the BMW diesels can be adapted to the Benz engines with almost no effort...so if all 3 of these setups use a Ford driveline, it should be equally possible to hook a ford 5 speed, and t-case up to my benz, giving me way easier parts availability, and more gearing options.

Hey Wanderer, nice to see somebody from Zukland here. Looking for a Bronco II for the wife and come by here to see how much info here (hopefully, this place will get as good as Zuk board). I too would like to know about diesels in the small fords!

Re: ranger TD q\'s

yah, well, seeing as this is for the Niva, I' guess that just leaves me as the odd one out then hmmm

what I know so far is that the little Ranger mini truck diesels werent 'common', but dont seem particularly rare up here in Canada...I'd just like some hard facts on them, rather than partial bits & pieces. in 1986/87 for example, the t-bird diesel was the BMW 524 diesel engine & ZF transmission...knowing that ZF make Ford T-cases, I can see how that might tie in to the trucks for those years, and a Ford/ZF style tranny/case would be perfect for my Niva( the ford 2.4TD makes ~125HP, btw - TONS for a small truck). Ditto for the mazda - given the Ford/Mazda clones of the late 80's/early 90's, I can understand ford having moved on to Mazda diesels for lower costs/homologated runs etc....we even got some mazda 626 diesels up here in Canada. ( those trannies cases wouldnt suit my needs though, as I'd be breaking new ground hooking them up to a Benz engine) no idea on teh Mitsu angle though - that was a new one on me...and teh onld guy actually popped the hood for me, so I know it WAS a mitsu ( same basic setup as the D50 dodge diesels, from the look of it)

anyone got hard facts ( or better yet, one of the BMW powered trucks) and would care to fill in some of the relevant driveline blanks for me?

The only info I know about is here www.therangerstation.com I know it was a NA 4 banger that had around 85 HP and something like 120 LBS of torque. Who's, I have no idea. What trannies, I have no idea. But, I would love to find a nice Turbo from some vehicle, with a stick, and transplant it into a D44/9" BII with a divorced 205 in it.

Re: ranger TD q\'s

Gracias - thats some answers about the NA engines, at least .

the ones I'm curious about are definitely turbo's though - not real hard to spot on the mitsu's, with a real big ( Garrett T3 sized) turbo hanging right off of the exhaust manifold ! ( bummer though - if the bulk of them are mitsu powered, it kills my idea of an easy swap 8^P )

I'll see if I can collar the old guy I was speaking to, and take a pic of the mitsu turbo - fwiw, they have a 'turbodiesel' logo right on the tailgate, so they're pretty easy to spot.

I'm also looking to buy a Bronco II, don't want to drive my zuk everyday, it has too many mods now to be street friendly

I have a deal on an '88 XLT with the 2.9 and all the options, so I'm looking for info to see if I really want to buy it.

Re: ranger TD q\'s

let me guess...you're going to want me to keep an eye out for a diesel driveline for you?? 8^D

actually, Mitsu just started opening their own dealerships in canada, and hey, wadda ya know, there's actually one in Kelowna - went and talked to the guys in the parts dept......and they think they'll be able to order in BRAND NEW 2002 spec, emissions legal 2.5 TD's 8^D ( they'll be getting back to me on cost, and how long it'll take)
