I recently purchased a 2000 Wrangler Sport. It has the 4.0L engine and 3 speed automatic. I noticed the top of the radiator (where the plastic top fits onto the metal body) seeps antifreeze until the engine warms up enough for the thremostat to open

I have not seen this on any other vehicle is this an indication the radiator cap needs replacing?

Plastic tank leaking at the seam to the core means that the radiator needs attention. A radiator shop can take it apart, replace the seal - a big O-ring - and put it back together for you. You can also probably find a new aftermarket radiator with brass tanks for a couple hundred bucks. That's what I would do.

The tank shouldn't leak, even if the pressure cap is related to your problem, which I doubt.

if it isnt too nasty, and you want to buy some time, try some of that radiator stop leka stuff..

it works suprisingly well on smaller leaks and pinholes.. about $2.50 a bottle.

other wise, as already said, have a shop repair, or better yet put that money towards a better radiator ( NO PLASTIC TANKS haha)

I ran the Jeep today up to operating temperature and there was no leak or seeping. This Jeep was at teh dealer for several months before I bought it. I am begining to believe the problem was simply a dried out gasket. I will keep an eye on it though. thanks for the reply and suggestions.

Mine had a small leak, and before I replaced the radiator, I tried the stop leako stuff, and it actually worked. I just poored it in and let the engine idle for about 30 minutes and presto. Dont know how long a fix but heh, it was cheap

Just FYI, according to Jeep this is a common problem for the plastic top tank radiators. If you happened to buy their extended warranty it should be covered. If not I suggest you replace it with a "real" radiator instead of resealing the plastic tank back on. I replaced mine on my 97 TJ and haven't had a problem since.
