Youch! That's why I've made a habit of killing my engine as I cross the finish. That way, I'm never panicking looking for the kill switch - I'm already reaching for it before trouble strikes. The cut tire guys all have to run a kill-cable in "pits" in case they cross the line unconcious. Shuts the engine off the instant they finish. Hasn't been a rollover since they instituted that policy several years back - not much you can do about a street truck, though/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif. We don't run a kill-cable in shallow drags & in my G.U.M.B.O. events, I don't put any of the fast guys in the "pit", they all run the "Fast Track". So, no kill-cable at my races. Most of the guys would never go for that on shallow drags 'cause they want power to the tires in case they get sideways. On the other hand, it's been my experience that most who go sideways do so because they stayed on the throttle TOO LONG. Either way, crashes can happen & they aren't much fun.

I found a non-staggered TCI unit. Guess I just need to find the part # of the staggered one. The nice thing about the one I looked at was that the spool that engages the flywheel is larger in diameter than a normal starter & has no shield around it at all. What seems to happen to me most often is the shield around the spool fills up & the mud dries in there. Then, even if you clean it out, they crap out on ya. The last starter I got was simply a POS. It won't completely engage the flywheel even though it still spins hard. It started acting up only the 3rd time I started the truck with that starter & before it ever saw mud.

I had a good starter on there that lasted 2 seasons before I had to change it & now I'm going through about 3 every 5 events. That's gotta stop. And I'll tell ya something else weird that just happened. When I took out this most recent starter, the bolts were really friggin' tight until they backed out about 1/4" & then the same happened in reversed when I put them back in. They weren't cross-threaded & I could move them with my fingers for quite a few turns. But, eventually they got so tight I had to resort to 1/2" drive to get them in. Should I just get new bolts, or do I need to clean up the threads in the block?

The part number through Herbert for the one I see is 356000.
I run into the same thing with the starter bolts. It is the mud and water. I put new bolts in at the beginning of the year since they are cheap enough. I use a well worn tap to clean the holes out in the block. A new tap would take to much metal out.
Do you run the inspection cover on the bottom of the trans? I used to use one with a ton of silicone to try to seal every place I thought mud could get into. Never worked for me. Now I don't use the cover, it seems to let the mud spin out of there and not cause as much trouble. Also if it does clog the starter I can easily rinse it out without removing it. You know, like when it is your turn to run and all you here is click click.
I have been lucky enough to only have to buy one starter a year for awhile now. I install a new one at the begining of the season,and clean and lube last years for a spare. I'm sure I just ruined that by talking about it.
Another thing I learned years ago, if you stall in the pit just let them pull you out. If you try to crank it buried in the mud, bad things happen to the starter.
