On my 95 XLT Bronc, should the rear wheels be making a kinda "thunk" sound when they are off the ground? I was checking bearins and stuff and started pushing/pulling them evenly in and out. Sounded kinda strange and all the lugs were tight, but I was told that there's supposed to be some play there. True or false?

Re: Rear wheel \"thunk\"

What you're hearing is the semi-floating C-clip axleshaft sliding in&out of the differential of your 8.8" rear-end. The axle is retained by a C-clip inside the diff carrier and has a little slop. Actually, there should not be enough to hear with the differential pinion shaft in place, but it may still be OK. Your XLT probably does not have a limited-slip diff (second position on second line of axle tage would be "L"; maybe "3L55") and an open diff may have more slop.
