If you don't mind taking a second to tell me what you think this rig is worth....
'71 CJ5 with brand new fiberglass body, front, new windshield, new paint, 350 chevy to T15 and D18 twin stick, D44 rear, new top, wiring harness, herculined interior, 2" body lift, 31" tires with good tread (90%) AT's, chrome wheels, good frame, sag. steering and swing pedal conversion, in good running shape, looks like new. How much do you think its worth? I'd very much appeciate your input. I'm thinking about buying it, but am not sure what the real value is. I'll try to deal down, but what is a price I should expect to pay? Thanks a ton, once again.

Well 7200 asking price, but I can deal with him as long as I know what the highest I should go is. I was thinking 6 wasn't too bad for it, but I needed other opinions. The tranny and tcase are both rebuilt, exhaust is new, basically the jeep is new with a used engine and frame, both good. Biggest concern is a resale on a '71 being lower because of the age and parts availability. Thanks

As a refresher for anyone else following along, here are the Jeep stats:'71 CJ5 with brand new fiberglass body, front, new windshield, new paint, 350 chevy to T15 and D18 twin stick, D44 rear, new top, wiring harness, herculined interior, 2" body lift, 31" tires with good tread (90%) AT's, chrome wheels, good frame, sag. steering and swing pedal conversion, in good running shape, looks like new.

And the asking price is $7200...

IMHO, I would think that is way high for that Jeep. For that price I would expect perfect paint, NO mechanical problems, good aggressive mud tires, and lockers in both ends.

What would I give for that Jeep? Probably tops at about $4800, and that would be stretching it. But then again, I am kinda cheap - I could do a lot to a stock Jeep with that much money /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Really though, it comes down to whether or not you like EVERYTHING on the Jeep. If you do, it is worth more, since that is how you might build it. It there are things you would change, consider that when offering the man how much you want to pay /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I'm with David on this one. I wouldn't give over $5K for this Jeep even if the guy were to show me over $10k in receipts. No matter what has been spent it's still a '71 and he should be expecting to take a big loss in selling it. He might get it, but it would have to be from someone who has "kick me" on the back of their shirt or they just REALLY like everything about that Jeep.

I concur,

pass it up at that price for a later model CJ, youll be thankful longterm.

you could buy 2 nice driver late 70s early 80sCjs in good shape for $7200 around here..

I concur as well. I don't doubt he's got that much in it, but on a 71 I dont think he'll ever get that much out of it. Some of the drawbacks off the top of my head on a 71:
-parts availability might be somewhat of issue,
-channel frame instead of boxed like 77 and later,
-D44 rear...is this the good 30 spline flanged D44 or the crappy one? (I forget which year they changed),
-narrow, thick spring pack, rough ridin' springs (IMHO)
-I dont care for the factory w/shield or roll bar if it still has 'em,
-factory low back seats?
I have to say I'm with DRM, I'd expect bigger muds, suspension lift and lockers for that price...at least in my neck of the woods. I guess I should add... I don't know jeep prices in PA.
I bought my 74 CJ5 for $1,500 with a steel replacement tub, fresh 304 w/ edlebrock intake & carb, headers, D44 rear, 3.73 gears, good paint, 2 1/2" lift and 31s...granted it needed a little welding on spring hangers, new gauges and still needs rewiring but that shouldn't be too bad when I get around to it. I'd rather pay $3,000 for a later year model and put $4,200 in mods on it.
Just my thoughts.

easy enough. Jeeps around me are way overpriced though. The jeep is really great... they are leather highback seats from a who knows what, the rollbar is late 70's style, paint is about a week old and beautiful... it doesn't have lockers or a lift or big meats. Jeep is great, nicer than mine now I'd think, but I'll wait for a CJ7. I've wanted the extra room, but aside from a few items, this jeep was great and thought it might fit the bill. Thanks for the input.

Hell, jeepgod01:
Went to your site and saw your 74. Thats a SWEET jeep! I love the color...same color as my bro-in-law's 74. Couldn't tell if you had 'em from the photo, but my bro-in-law put black diamond plate corners and rockers on that yellow tub and it really looks good. Back on the $7,200 jeep...if you've got a 5 already, I'd definately wait and get a 6,7 or 8, just to have something different to play with : )

Hey thanks for the compliment. That site is horrible though. Typing mistakes abound. I like the black/yellow contrast (esp. since I'm from pittsburgh.. Steelers fan.) but hate to put diamond plate corners on and cover up my new paint, esp since I did it myself. I just decided to keep the roll bar and windshield black instead. I've actually thought about it and just decided that since I have a spare frame, a few enignes/trannys/cases/axles...well everything minus a tub/seats/wiring, I'm going to just build another one this summer rather than pay for what someone else built. Anybody want trade a CJ5 frame for a CJ7?

For $7200 you could build an aftermarket Jeep with more performance parts. Aftermarket frame, kevlar body, chevy drivetrain, D44 axles with gearing and lockers, nice seats and a full cage.

My Jeep is just a leaky submarine in disquise
