OK you expert welders out there, I need some help.

As part of the shackle reverse with YJ springs I'm working on, I'd like to remove the front spring hanger and replace it with a shackle hanger.

I have some extra YJ springs so I thought I could just cut the eye off the end of the spring and use it for a shackle hanger. I would then weld this spring eye shackle hanger onto the frame.

My question is, any problems with welding the spring eye (spring steel) onto the zuk frame (mild steel?)?

I guess I don't care about losing the spring temper since it will just be a hanger but I certainly don't want a weak or brittle weld that will break at the worst possible time.

BTW, I would be using a 220V MIG welder with .03 mild steel wire and straight CO2 gas. OK?

Thanks guys,
Paul

I wouldn't bother using spring steel and welding it. Even if you anneal it its not going to weld strong. You
might consider bolting it on by leaving say a 4" length of it and then drilling it. but you need to make the
frame better for holding the bolts.

you'd be better off taking a 2X ?? piece of 1/4" Box or rectangular tubing, drill and sleeve it with tubing
with the right Inside Dia and welding that on.

I'd keep away from the spring steel, it's got all the makings of some thing going bad
. Take the time and effort and fab up some mild steel brackets, weld em on and KNOW for sure thats it's guna last
. Some times the quick and easy way looks good but you just end up doing it twice.

Hey Scott and all,

Well actually that was my first thought too. I got these from JC Whipme:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10108&storeId=10101&langId=-1&productId=224296&mediaCode=ZX&appId=216134

The problem is the bushing eye or hole is really small, 1" in diameter (even smaller than zuk!). I thought they would be the same size as the shackle end YJ bushings (which I have extras of) but they must be some weird CJ size. I would need to locate some CJ bushings and a new greasable bolt as the 1/2" bolt I was going to use is probably to big for such a small sized bushing. So because of these issues I was thinking to return the hangers and try something else.

Seems the consensus is don't weld spring steel. To bad, it would have been really easy to use the spring eyes.

Thanks for helping guys,
Paul
