Ok, I recieved my lisencs about 4 months ago, and since we have only one car in the family, we are looking to get me a car, my first choice is a Jeep Cherokee preferably 4wd, we went shopping around today, and found one for 13,100, I talked to my uncle in La who deals in cars and attends auctions and he raid from his book, and found the value of it to be around 10000 at retail. My question is, Is a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport a good car for me to use as a daily driver, or should I resign to a more mundane car? And if I was to go with an older model, what kind of mileage would be acceptable?

Yes an XJ is a good DD. When I was looking for mine I saw a lot of '00's with water leaks from the left rear 1/4 window. Check for water stains on the seal, and behind the spare tire. I wish I could have gotten in to the auctions. Make sure that you get the 4.0L inline 6cyl. Not sure on milage, I've got a lift and tires w/o regearing so my speedo is not acurate.

YES, the cherokee is a great rig as a DD. However, if you are tight on money then 16-21 mpg is what you can expect unless you drive it like you stole(you know who you are)

Years 94 and up seems to have better wiring and other safety stuff if your into that.
$4k and up for price and I wouldn't buy one with over 130k miles unless it was in pristine condition.

I would save the money and get an older 94+ and put the money into mods myself...

I am up to 105K miles on my 99.. Seems to be a good daily driver thus far!

Though I have a stick and the power below 2grand is weak at best. I desperately need to find a fix as that's where a lot of my slow speed driving/merging occurs. However with an automatic the thing doesn't move until like 1500 rpm so you'd never notice the power deficit.

I generally average around 22-23 hwy.

Automatic: 21 at best.

Hi welcome to the board.
Yes the Cherokee's make very good daily drivers and as mentioned already make sure you get a 4.0 six cylinder. They are know for how long they last. Also make sure it has 4 wheel drive not all Cherokee's have 4 wheel drive.
when you ask about milage do you mean MPG or mileage on the vehicle.
If you mean MPG then it will depend on how you drive it. But mine gets in the neighborhood of 18 over all.
If your talking about the total mileage on the vehicle then as a guide I always go by 12 to 15 thousand miles a year. Which is average for most people.

You can get a 2000 for less than that. I just bought mine with 77000 miles on it (yeah I know, kinda high) and only paid 10,000 and I could have got one cheaper than that. Watch out for the closed cooling system. This uses a pressurized bottle and will not have a radiator cap. These are trouble (eventually). Stick with a 4.0 as well. I recommend Carmax (no, I don't have stock in the company). That was the easiest buy I ever did and did not have to put any money down. Plus, from what I understand, they go over their vehicles with a fine tooth comb mostly. Fuel mileage varies. 4.0's don't seem to like stop and go much. On open highway ( Dallas to Houston) I got 230 miles on half a tank or so. The tank holds roughly 16 gallons so this is really good fuel mileage. Driving into Dallas from my house I can average 250 for a whole tank of fuel. You do the math. If you get one, you'll like it if it has been taken care of.

Hint, if you can have someone at home on a computer. When you find one you like have them pull it up on www.kbb.com to make sure the price range is in the ball park. I had a laptop and a mobile modem so I know it's helpful. A reputable dealership will have no problem showing you the blue book value AND a Carfax report (if you are serious about buying the vehicle). Even with that still do an inspection for rust or creases in the frame or body, look at it in the sun and see if there are any slight changes in the color between panels (indicates re-painting, unless it's a transition from fiberglass to metal. Theyre will be a slight change) and look for overspray in the door jams, around the trim on the windows or underneath. It should also be glossy and you should be able to see yourself in it. If not then for some reason the paint has been altered and that indicates something has happened in the past. Also look for water damage and salt corosion.
Now this is on a newer XJ mind you. Expect that kind of stuff on an older one. Just my 2 cents.
