Quadrajet question...

I just installed one on my 360. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I climbed a hill just now in 4HI that I was NEVER able to clear with my Holley. The Rochester just kept chugging!
My question is idle speed. I have the idle screw backed out so it's not even touching the plate, and I'm still hitting 1100 rpm at idle. What am I missing?
Thanks!

You need to set the 2 idle / air mix fuel screws at the fron bottom of the carb. These are for the idle circuit only. Run them in and back out the pair 3 to 4 turns. Go from there. Also try and keep them close to each other in the # of turns.

By chance do you know which is the air and which is the fuel? I'm in a high altitude location, so I need to lean it a bit from sea level.
Thanks

They are both the same. They are for each side of the carb.(actually for the primaries)
The farther you back them out the more it richens up that side of the carb. Thats why you want to keep them close in # of turns.

I was gonna hassle you for that, but I figured that we'd get the problem taken care of first.
I was gonna tell you that you build one heck of an engine Mr. if it will idle at that. Can you give me some building tips?/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

I wish I could take credit for the build, but a buddy in Colorado built it for me.
BTW, are you using an aftermarket manifold? I was looking at a Performer, but this stock 4bbl manifold seems to run well. Would it be worth changing?

Stock manifold? Yea, you could say that.......on all of my chevys. I don't have any jeeps with a q-jet. I've been running them forever on all my chevys. I always thought they beat the crap out of holleys.

I have a 304 w/ q-jet on top via a holley dominator intake??
really hybrid but runs great. i have been told by all the self proclaimed "gurus" around here that the e-brock performer intake would send the fuel better, but ........
I am happy. (well sorta-360 dream'n)

I'll play with the mixture a little bit later on. BTW, does anyone need an almost-new Holley 4bbl? I'll make you a deal!
